2018 Garden of Lights

San Diego Botanic Garden in Encinitas

Holiday lights at this time of year are great fun, and a terrific venue to enjoy them…at a cost… is at the San Diego Botanic Gardens.

The annual Garden of Lights at the San Diego Botanic Gardens in Encinitas, opens tonight, Saturday December 1st.

The San Diego Botanic Garden is a beautiful place to enjoy at any time of the year, but I suspect no one would deny that it’s especially magical during the holidays when the gardens come to life with more than 125,000 sparkling lights for their annual Garden of Lights event.

You can enjoy the gardens and lights from December 1st through the 23rd, and then again from the 26th to the 30th, from 5 – 8:30 PM every day (the San Diego Botanic Garden opens at 9 am).

Enjoy this tour of the Garden of Lights (from YouTube - not my video)

We visited the Garden of Lights a few years ago and I have to say it was a very special place to visit over the holidays, and truly magical.

And if the beauty of these lighted gardens is not enough, you can also enjoy horse drawn wagon rides (from 5:30 – 8:30, Dec. 14 – 23, and Dec. 26 – 30, $3 per person with children 3 and under free), marshmallow roasting, visits from Santa (4 different ones, from the 1st through the 23rd), holiday crafts for children (free), a nutcracker display, live music (performances vary depending on the night), face painting (starts at $5), a musical light show, and refreshments including mulled wine and beer (21+) and non-alcoholic beverages – costs vary by beverage.

Food is available from food trucks that vary from night to night – here’s the food truck schedule.

And the kids can also enjoy snow – something we don’t see here in SoCal except in the mountains! There is a toddler snow pit and a snow slope for sledding (sleds are provided). Bring appropriate clothing including your gloves!

Admission for Sunday – Thursday: Members $10; Seniors, Active Military, and Students $10; Non-Members $18 and children ages 3–12, $5 with some additional fees for certain activities.

Friday and Saturday (Premium pricing): Members $15; Seniors, Active Military and Students $10, Non-Members $25, and children ages 3–12 are $5.

Check the website for more details on ticket pricing and premium versus regular nights.

NOTE: Tickets are purchased at the site when attending – there is no advance purchase. Admission for Garden of Lights begins at 4 pm.

If you haven’t visited this botanic treasure in Encinitas, North San Diego County, the Garden of Lights over the holidays could be the perfect time.

Hi Ron and Alexandra Seigel  - it would certainly be cool for those kids who have not experienced snow! They were not offering this when we went a number of years ago. Time to go again.

A big part of Christmas for me is the lights. We have a city outside Oklahoma City named Chickasha that is known for its lighting of a public park you drvie through.

Such a fun place to be, my family and I have been to Zoolights a few times and that is always neat.  I think they light up the botanical gardens as well, but we have not visited them.

That must be fun to see Joe Pryor  ! No doubt there are many communities that offer special places filled with lights. I enjoy seeing them when out and about, too!

Hi Gabe Sanders

We went the year we moved out here from Boston - such a treat to walk through gorgeous lit-up gardens in 50 degree weather in the winter. And it WAS beautiful. We need to go back.
