I am inspired by persistent people

Real Estate Agent with The Virtual Real Estate Team 104556

Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not: nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not: the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. Calvin Coolidge

I am a bit amazed that I would use a quotation by Silent Cal. This was a President who will not go down in the top tier of Presidents. However, that does not make this quotation any less important or insightful. Let me give you a few examples:

I remember when I was at RE/MAX and there was one agent who exemplified this quote and who had persistence and determination in large quantity. She was a high school educated ex-hairdresser who would never be confused with someone with an off the charts IQ. What she always had was a desire to succeed and no mistakes was going to fill her with doubt, it only made her try harder. She sold millions of real estate and never looked back. It is at this point I need to point out that as important as persistence and determination are extremely important for success, it has to be put into context. In her drive she also did not respect the rules and eventually led to her downfall. She felt that being number one was so important that she also approached real estate with blinders. If caused her to have to leave the business. Make sure that these qualities are harnessed to doing the right thing.

My second example is for one of the nicest person I know. This guy is so smart when it comes to his IQ that he was head of his local Mensa chapter. The problem was that he had to determination or persistence. I would call it being lazy and without ambition. It frustrates me that he is without motivation because I have always admired extremely intelligent people. But if you have ever read books by Daniel Goleman like Emotional Intelligence, you realize that EQ can be more important than IQ. The sad part is he is also a brilliant musician and songwriter that I wish could harness that talent and try to do something with it. The problem is when you see successful musicians they have often failed miserably but never gave up.

We all have different abilities, different personalities and varying EQs and IQs. Life is a blink of an eye and to waste what we have is for me a tragedy. I think of retrospective songs like A pirate looks at 4o or Yesterday when I was Young. I am getting towards the December of my years and as I look in retrospect I have made a lot of mistakes, but it has never slowed me down or made me quite trying. I am still determined to succeed, to produce, to give to others, and to enjoy life. I really don't live with regrets and I will stay persistent to the end of my days. When my life is done I will look at it life being the person that breaks the tape first in a race. This is a race we should all win.

Bravo to this post, Joe. We have the responsibility to live up to our full potential. Talent, EQ, IQ, as you mention, can only go so far. We have to have drive and determination to excel - and the wisdom to do so as a kind, gracious, and honest human being. I'd say you're on the right path.

( By the way, Danial Goleman's book was a true life changer for me, really helped me realize the importance of recognizing other's fears or discomforts through communication and behavior.)

Coolidge's quote resonates, Joe! I call it tenacious and you HAVE to have it to be successful, for sure! Great examples in your post and I too, am a big believer in 'success by persistence.'

People say I am ferocious in my determination. There is always a way. I keep looking for the way when I find stumbling blocks, and I do find it. Further, when I decide to go out, I will go out on top. Then I'll do something else.

I think Barbara Todaro is right. Determination is either in your DNA or it's not.

I tend to think of that as good work ethic.  And I have that.  I also like a lot of his historical policy stances as well as his profound words in this quote.  I certainly agreed with his not reinstating law enforcement after a strike.  I 100% agree you can't strike when it puts public safety in jeopardy.  He's one of my favorite historical presidents.

Hello Joe - thanks to Carol's Second Chance Saturday post I "found" this selection and a very worthwhile read indeed. I can't recall many Coolidge quotes but this one is both known to me and very appropriate with the examples you cite.

Hello Joe, this quote by Coolidge is an eye-opener and provocative, but quite true I'm afraid.  I have marveled often at those with mediocre talent/experience but great marketing ability to get in front of the pack.  Persistence and drive will beat the smartest but poorly motivated individual or company.  Good one and thanks.

Joe, lessons are gifts given to us every moment of every day. It's ours to choose how to create or recreate our person, our intention, our way of making life the very best it can be. We are also given intrinsic gifts that shouldn't be squandered.

You have no regrets....I do. But, it's all gotten me to this point, and I'm in a good place, so maybe losing that in my life is a good idea!

We can all learn from each other. Thanks for being a teacher.

Joe Pryor - You come across to me as a person with fire in your belly and a humble heart. Someone who never stops learning life lessons. I cherish learning vicariously through your insights. This one post alone has so much context. It is as if I'm pulling back the curtain reading your life while examining my own. Joe, A very good quote that I have found inspiring over the years.  It is so true. And you support this quote with your stories very well.

Didn't Edison do thousands of experiments until he got things right with the light bulb?

Glad to hear you have been a person who just keeps going and have no regrets about how you use and used your time.
