I love shopping in antique and consignment shops but the money saved can often cost you a bundle. One of my sellers is now going through the expensive procedure of having her three floor home completely tented because of a lovely dining room table and six chairs she purchased at a great price. Termite infestation is not always visable until it is too late and once the furniture is in your home you have your Trojan termites. There is a solution and it is quite a simple one. Here in Sarasota we have several pest control companies that offer "Vault" fumigation. One of them is Pestguard. You have your furniture delivered to them, it is stored in an air-tight container until there is enough furniture to warrant a fumigation run and then you can come pick it back up, all clean and clear. So, be cautious when bringing any kind of wooden furniture, baskets or accessories into your home. You never know what lurks within!
Wow! never given much though to Trojan Termites storing away in furniture of other items. Knowing where to store wood furniture in a safe environment or have them fumigated would eliminate these sneaky pest from invading our home.
What I find most distressing is that many buyers and sellers do not get a pest prevention contract that protects them later. All that money for tenting and they can come right back! Especially here in Florida.
Took me by surprise!
Marnie, I've always wondered about that and particularly with some rough primative pieces that are stored in a barn or shed on a dirt floor! Pennies on the dollar to get proper protection!
I guess that "weathered" look may be termite induced!
Good morning Marnie. I never ever heard of this before but it did get my attention.
I now wonder if furniture stores, consignment shops etc. even check for termites.
Wow Marnie I've never heard of this happening to anyone here in PHX and we've known for termites. That would be a major bummer - yikes!
The thing is, who ever really knows, when they find termites, where they came from? We always assume that it is a swarm.
