I have been an AT&T customer forever. I have been with them since they were Bell Atlantic. In short it has been about 40 years. In the area I live AT&T was the only service for cell service when I moved here. There were other providers but none had any service in my new small town. And so I stayed with them, overpaid, and was abused with every increasing prices without the ability to text. Whenever there were increases and I wanted to do better I was told I already had their best deal.

About a month ago, I paid my bill and asked to cancel my service. It was only then that I was offered a free phone, texting included and a prepaid account for half of what I was paying.

Long story short, there was no free phone, and the credit balance I was owed could not be refunded or applied to my prepaid service. I made numerous phone calls, was talked to like an errant child, was told to call another department. Each call was worse than the one before and there was never a manager available.

In total frustration I wrote to the CEO and sent it certified return requested mail. Today it came back to me saying they would not accept delivery.

So if you ever deal with this lousy company remember they don't care about you and will not ever correct their own mistakes. I am beyond frustrated and if you will re-blog this I would really appreciate it.

That seems to be the sad way of the world these days, we have to threaten to cancel before they will give us a decent deal,whether it be for internet service, cell phone service, tv service or even auto insurance among many other services.

I feel your pain Sheila Anderson (sorry to use that over used phrase) as I was dealing with horrible service from Obama care yesterday.

As far a phone service we have been very happy with the services we receive through Walmart both Straight Talk Home Phone services and their cell phone service. They were a bit of a pain to set up the 1st time but we have had years of excellent service since.

Hi Sheila- we had AT&T for years. I learned that you had to call them and ask for special rates or services because you were a loyal customer and then they would give it to you. When we moved to Northern VA we switched to Verizon because we could not get good cell service via AT&T where we lived.

I feel your pain, Sheila.  Over the years my history with AT&T has mirrored your's.  About a year and a half ago, I switched my cell service to Consumer Cellular.  The difference in customer service is the difference between night and day.  I still have my land line and internet with AT&T, who actually rewired my house free of charge, and lowered my bill for internet services shortly after I canceled my cell service with them.  I often wonder why companies offer perks to entice new customers, rather than offering to their existing ones, and lose them instead.

Hi Sheila Anderson 

Can't sleep so came on to AR and saw this. These companies know they have us over a barrel. BUT Comcast and AT&T are horrid. I'm with Verizon they are better than AT&T but just as expensive.

Dear Sheila,

The same thing happened to me with Comcast until they got competition. I paid twice what my friends did for the same service, but it was the only game in town at the time. They said, it was because they changed the billing cycle, but it remained in place for several more years, until I switched to another provider. Would never go back unless they would let me make up the overpaid years for free.

Wow. How frustrating! I saw this because Gabe shared your post. Dealing with a monopoly like ATT is like riding a merry-go-round, but not having any fun doing it. Keep us posted. Maybe something good will eventually come out of this saga.
