TXAttorneyGeneral@public.govdelivery.com 5:06 PM (46 minutes ago) to me Texas Attorney General, Ken Paxton FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE December 6, 2018 www.texasattorneygeneral.gov PRESS OFFICE: (512) 463-2050 Kayleigh Lovvorn: Kayleigh.Lovvorn@oag.texas.gov AG Paxton Announces Bipartisan Fight Against Robocalls AUSTIN – Attorney General Ken Paxton today announced that he joined a bipartisan group of 40 state attorneys general to stop or reduce irritating and potentially harmful robocalls. This coalition’s mission is to review the technology that major telecom companies are pursuing to combat illegal robocalls made throughout the country. This coalition is working to develop a detailed understanding of technologically feasible methods to reduce unwanted robocalls and illegal telemarketing, collaborating with major telecom companies to encourage expedition of consumer solutions, and determining what recommendations should be made to the FCC. “Unwanted phone calls are both a nuisance and an invasion of privacy, and growing robocall scams could cost Texans anywhere from a few dollars to their life savings,” Attorney General Paxton said. “This coalition is dedicated to protecting citizens from these risks and engaging telecom companies in a nationwide effort to put an end to these intrusive calls.” Since its formation, the multistate group has held in-depth meetings with several major telecom companies, opening channels for greater information sharing about the technological capabilities currently in existence or in development to minimize the reach and impact of robocalls.

This group, led by Attorney General Josh Stein of North Carolina, Attorney General Curtis Hill of Indiana, and Attorney General Gordon MacDonald of New Hampshire, also includes attorneys general from Texas, Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, District of Columbia, Florida, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.

Good for them in taking action.  The are ridiculously annoying and potentially dangerous.

We cut out a bunch when we got rid of our landline.  Controlling them on our cell phones is pretty easy - any unknown number goes to VM and with transcription, I can block or return the call.

William Feela - Las year, I contacted my provider and they told me they would stop it. It lasted about 3 days; then the robocalls started up again. On Monday, December 3, I made another complaint. Again, this time it stopped until today. I got about six since this morning. It just seems that the robo villains are very persistent and continue to break through whatever barriers telephone companies have put in place and I am hoping the group of lawmakers (I see that Minnesota is included) can figure out a way to make it stop for good.

Susan Haughton - How interesting about the landline! I still have one and discussed the possibility of eliminating it with my provider but was told, to do so would mean I'd pay more for services and lose their discount on the bundle (TV, Interent, and Landline). Hmmmm..... the insanity of these annoying calls is full throttle! I need to figure out a way to get Internet for free at high speed and cancel the other two options. I lived without T.V. before, I can do it again; however, I hate to lose my landline #. It's definitely something to think about!

Oh, and by the way, Two of the recent calls I got on VM included telephone numbers. I called them and guess what? I received a recorded message on both calls saying, the number you have called is no longer in service. Now isn't that bizarre!!! I called the telephone company and was told, they know and are aware of this issue. But they had no way to resolve it.

Ironically, on Tuesday, I started getting robocalls on my Cell Phone for the very first time!

This post is great, my question is it just another way politicians try to win our votes? I was attacked by Robo Calls from Apple.... anyway I called Verizon... was wonderful for a week and then they suggested I buy something to stop it... really??? so now I am back to my 4-6 calls a day.... and I just hang up...Endre

Endre Barath, Jr. - I can't speak for politicians but in looking at the list of states that support the "Bipartisan Fight Against Robcalls, it isn't slanted toward the red or the blue states. Hopefully, this coalition can make good on their united efforts. It is a shame that Verizon suggested you pay to stop it. Whenever I'm not satisfied with an answer, I ask for the person's name, write it down, date and time and call back later. Like any company, not all employees are equal or have the same type of authority.

Let's keep our fingers crossed!

Those robocalls are driving me nuts, Patricia. I must have blocked at least a dozen calls just yesterday. And this morning, I see two more that came in overnight.

Everyone just needs to get RoboKiller. I started a month ago and now I have peace again. No more Robo calls for me. I was getting at least 6 a day and it's only going to get worse.

Kat Palmiotti - those robocalls are like brainwashing, what the enemies did in Europe during WWII, Locked up innocent people and let buckets of water drip on their heads.

Nina Hollander - it bears repeating what I just wrote back to Kat. - the robocalls are like brainwashing, what the enemies did in East Europe during WW11, locking up innocent people, letting buckets of water drip on their heads to drive them crazy.

Mike Baltierra - Sounds a like a good idea. I just wish the phone companies could do a better job making it quit without having consumers pay more to other companies. Endre Barath, Jr. mentioned his service provider suggested he buy something to stop it. I just don't think that's fair. Hopefully, this coalition can make progress quickly and give us back our lives with peace and quiet.

Patricia those calls a really irritating.  It was bad enough when I got them on my home phone, but not they are even calling my cell phone.  Glad someone is trying to do something about it.
