Door County Neighborhoods:
Choosing the right location in Door County
I've been selling Door County properties for sale for approximately 1/3rd of my life, and when I meet a prospective purchaser that is looking for a Door County home, one of the very first things that I will ask is "Where do you like to be in Door County?"
Door County's towns, villages and city all have unique and distinct personalities, like any other neighborhoods in the United States, and since we don't necessarily have actual neighborhoods (other than in the City of Sturgeon Bay), I like to lay out the different "flavors" of Door County for my customers and clients. I try to help them learn what town or village will be the right fit for their lifestyle, learning where they want to work, live and play.
I'll start, as an example, with the range a Buyer will generally give me. "We'd like to look at homes/condominiums/vacant land/businesses (take your pick) between Egg Harbor/Jacksonport to Ellison Bay". Well, that's a broad range, and Ellison Bay can stretch into Northport, so we spend more time trying to define the perfect town or village that you'll choose to call your Door County home.
The Town of Baileys Harbor has a unique "vibe" that has grown greatly in popularity over the past 15 years. Once a sleepy community on the water, known as "The Quiet Side", it has enjoyed a virtual Renaissance over the past decade. With a vast amount of Baileys Harbor under protection of The Ridges, as well as The Door County Land Trust and The Nature Conservancy, this is a place that people love to visit....and eventually many call home. The Town of Baileys Harbor is eclectic, and its residents like it that way. It is home to Door County's first commercial brewery, the incredible Ridges Sanctuary, which is open to the public, great golf at Maxwelton Braes, eclectic shops that sell everything from fine art and furnishings to Door County memorabilia and "the Harbor" offer dining that ranges from a good burger (try the Coyote Roadhouse, next to Kangaroo Lake) to an actual Lobster Boil and everything in between. It is also home to Door County Publishing, which publishes the popular Peninsula Pulse and Door County Living. In the past five years, I have sold more Baileys Harbor properties for sale than I have in the previous ten. Baileys Harbor has an active planning commission that dictates its growth, and so far the growth has been practical and overwhelmingly positive. If you like a community with positive energy, great love for preservation of nature and wildlife, and fun things to do (the Brewery offers Bingo and Trivia for locals and visitors in the winter), then Baileys Harbor may be the place for you to call your Door County home. Baileys Harbor Condominiums and Waterfront Homes
Jumping nearly across to the other side of the Peninsula, Fish Creek is the thriving commercial center of the Town of Gibraltar and for years has been known as a year-round destination for Door County visitors. From shopping at Founder's Square, with its multiple shops, to the flagship On Deck store, as well as the popular Settlement Shops, hat-head and dozens of year-round restaurants (everything from surprisingly good street taco stands to fine dining (try the Whistling Swan), Fish Creek has long been a destination for Door County home and condominium buyers. Fish Creek boasts some of the most expensive real estate in Door County with its homes for sale on Cottage Row, Island View Road and White Cliff Road, which starts in Fish Creek and ends in Egg Harbor. One extremely popular choice for condominium buyers is exclusive Hidden Harbor Condominiums. Residents and visitors love Fish Creek for its location (mid-way up on the Peninsula) as well as for the myriad of things to do--Fish Creek is home to Peninsula State Park, Edgewood Orchard Gallery, Peninsula Art School, America's oldest summer theater, the Peninsula Players, and the Door County Auditorium--where I have seen acts as diverse as the Indigo Girls to the Beach Boys. PENINSULA STATE PARK
Egg Harbor is the name of both the town and the village of Egg Harbor in Door County, Wisconsin. Egg Harbor is growing destination in Door County, with visitors enjoying the marina and public beach, the Kress Pavilion, with sunset concert series, along with exceptional dining and shopping. Egg Harbor also features Shipwrecked Brew Pub, HATCH Distillery, and is the home of the Door County Trolley Co., which has popular tours all year long (try the Holiday Pub Crawl or the Ghost Tour, both of which I can recommend). The Village spreads out into the Town of Egg Harbor, which is the location of the popular, private Horseshoe Bay Golf Club and more expensive real estate along the sprawling shores of Green Bay. Egg Harbor condominiums for sale are popular throughout the year, as well as the stately shore homes you'll see (or not see, because of long private driveways) that sometimes are listed and are quickly sold. Jumping to the "Tip of the Door", the Town of Liberty Grove is the home of lovely Ellison Bay and quaint Gills Rock (as well as Newport, Northport, Rowleys Bay, Europe Lake, Appleport and other northern communities). Ellison Bay and Gills Rock each contain numerous parks (local, as well as Newport State Park and the County's Door Bluff Park and Ellison Bay Bluff Park) as well as numerous public beaches, boat launches and public water access points. This is the "True North" of Door County, with more shore front footage than any other municipality north of Green Bay (on both Green Bay and Lake Michigan) and the home of the infamous "Death's Door"--the area where Lake Michigan and Green Bay meet together, the scene of numerous ship wrecks from the 1800s and 1900s (indeed, French settlers to the area gave it the name "Portes des Morts"--the Door of Death).
Other than that somber note, you'll find Liberty Grove and it's commercial centers of Ellison Bay and Gills Rock full of charm, with wonderful local items you cannot find elsewhere. Stop at the Turtle Ridge Gallery, any one of half a dozen wonderful artisan pottery shops (we love Clay Bay Pottery), try the Island Orchard Cider brewery (hard apple cider and more--try the Pear Cider (yum), plus delicious homemade goods throughout, including Kick Ash Products, Bea's Ho-Made Products or Uncle Tom's Candy. If you love life-long learning experiences, The Clearing adult school in Ellison Bay is an incredible opportunity. Gills Rock, a historical commercial fishing community, is the place for fresh whitefish, smoked fish and much more. Liberty Grove is also home to some incredible restaurants, including the renowned Wickman House and The Shoreline, where you'll find some of the best dinners in the NATION.
WICKMAN HOUSE WINTER SCENE
There are many wonderful reasons to live in Liberty Grove, and one of the best is the dark sky initiative at Newport State Park--Liberty Grove has made light polution (actual lighting) an resolution--in order to allow visitors and citizens to see the stars (and the magnificent Northern Lights) clearly. Liberty Grove has only a few condominium developments, but one of Door County's best is Cottage Glen at Ellison Bay, which is located on 40 acres close to the Ellison Bay Beach and Marina. People love the solitude of Liberty Grove after the hustle-and-bustle of city life. To find homes for sale in Ellison Bay, Gills Rock and Liberty Grove, check here.
Next stop: The Village of Ephraim, where homes do NOT linger on the market. If you want Ephraim real estate, be ready to move quickly. A small village (under 400 year-round residents at 2010 census time) on the shores of Green Bay, this is one of Door County's most popular romantic retreats because of its incredible sunsets over the water. Ephraim was also the last "dry" town or village in the State of Wisconsin (Prohibition was repealed here in 2016!!), and boasts some of northern Door County's oldest businesses, including the Old Post Office restaurant at the Edgewater Resort, and no trip to Door County would be complete without a stop at the Skyway Drive-In movie theater in Ephraim (one of the last remaining the United States playing first-run movies) as well as stopping for ice cream at Wilson's Ice Cream Parlor (also a great place for lunch). Ephraim real estate is expensive, and Ephraim shares an airport with the Town of Gibraltar, allowing people from around the world with private planes purchase Ephraim real estate. For information on Ephraim homes for sale, check here. Little Ephraim is also home to one of the nation's oldest sailing clubs, the Ephraim Yacht Club, which has lessons and social events for all ages. Always hugely in demand, but rare in supply, are Ephraim condominiums for sale. For information on available Ephraim condos for sale, click here.
Recently voted Door County's most popular destination, the Village of Sister Bay has come into its own in the past few years. With dozens of fantastic new shops and galleries, fabulous restaurants and premier lodging establishments (as well as several other established and well-loved Door County traditions, like Al Johnson's Swedish Restaurant and Butik, the Sister Bay Bowl, Sister Bay's public beach and marina, and the 9-hole Bay Ridge Golf Course, among others), Sister Bay has truly come into its own as a year-round destination and place to call home.
WELCOME TO SISTER BAY
With doctors, dentists, a lumber yard, banks and hardware store, as well as northern Door's only pharmacy north of Sturgeon Bay and a first-class public library, Sister Bay real estate has also become an extremely hot commodity. Sister Bay even boasts a branch of Northeastern Wisconsin Technical College (albeit a tiny branch).
