The Christmas Gift I Never Forgot...What Was Yours?

The holidays always bring back wonderful memories for me. Besides the family dinners, Christmas lights, and the cheerful mood everyone is in, there are also gifts that I remember.

The Christmas gift that has always been in my heart is one I received when I christmas cookieswas living in my first apartment.

This was in Houston, my hometown, and I’d met a good group of people who lived there. We went to dinner together and played water volleyball every weekend. In fact, I’m still friends with many of them.

One evening there was a knock at the door. When I opened it, there stood the mother of one of my apartment friends.

Mrs. H. smiled and said….

Merry Christmas, Kathy. I thought you might like these.

In her hand was a plate of all kinds of homemade Christmas cookies. You can’t buy these. I wanted to cry. There must have been 3 or 4 dozen and each one was special.

I’ve had jewelry and tech stuff, clothing and purses, and while they were all treasured, this plate of cookies was one of the most cherished gifts I’d ever received because it was given from the heart.

What was your most memorable Christmas/Hanukkah gift?

Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD Isn't it funny how we remember our dolls?  Now that I look back, I think that at one time, I wanted a Raggedy Ann doll too but only because my good friend wanted one.

Ron and Alexandra Seigel I want to fill my life with "good" stories that bring a smile to my face.

Anna Banana Kruchten CRB, CRS 602-380-4886 thank you so much for the feature in our group!

Myrl Jeffcoat it reminds me of the "underwear" money aunts and uncles used to give as gifts. LOL  I love that you don't put any caveats on your monetary gifts.

It's hard to name just one gift. My most recent was last year, just before I flew over to Honolulu to spend New Year's with Hella Rothwell, my team member, Barbara Dow, mailed a present to my house in Hawaii. It was a silver chain bracelet with a small Buddha. Because she overhead me tell my husband that a person can never have too many Buddhas.

One special memory is when my older brother and I received our cowboy and cowgirl outfits for Christmas. I only really "remember" because of the special photographs that were taken that year, but I also remember the sulfur smell of my brothers cap gun... Another year all my friends got electric hot rollers for Christmas, and I was devastated I didn't get them. A full 12 months later, the following Christmas, they arrived.  I used those hot rollers for years!

Morning Kathy.

My fondness memories was not what I received but the delight on our kids faces when we were struggling for funds.  Somehow we found the money to give them the one gift they really wanted.

One of my most memorable Christmas gifts was an afghan made by my grandmother.  I was a young kid at the time, but as luck would have it the Christmas morning I opened that gift, it was like a hug from grandmom from states away.  I slept under that thing all day and the next.  Still have it.

This is a great post, by the way. I'm honored to add my most memorable gift.

My grandfather died in 1987. I was devastated, as this was the first person that I was really close to that had died. I had lived with my mom and grandparents the first 2 years of my life because Dad was in the Navy.

My grandfather only had a sixth grade education, so his spelling wasn't the best. He had been ill for about 5 years and he told my grandmother that he wanted to leave some of "his money" to his children and grandchildren,( which wasn't a lot). So, he wrote each of his children's and grandchildren's names on a sheet of paper with the amount he wanted to give them.

Christmas 1988 or 1989, my grandmother was unable to come celebrate with the family so she sent gifts down. We were instructed to open this one gift together. When we opened our box, I saw a copy of the piece of paper my grandfather had written, in his childish scrawl, along with the money he wanted us to have.

You could have heard a pin drop.  We were all crying. It wasn't the money but the handwriting brought our loss home as we remembered him.

Best gift ever.

I don't recall how old I was, but I had told everyone I wanted a camera. That Christmas, I got 3 of them!

Your post has sent me back in time, thinking of many gifts and many people - many who are no longer with us.

My most treasured Christmas gift was my son Joshua born on Christmas Eve.

My childhood gift I never forgot was the doll Baby Secret. I still remember the smell of that doll and her little lips moving when she whispered.

My birthday is Christmas Eve, so I got two sets of presents each year from my parents.  My favorite birthday/Christmas was when I turned 13.  I got a tennis racket for my birthday and an electric guitar for Christmas.  I still play tennis and guitar.  They were gifts that literally lasted a lifetime, although I don't still have the same racket and guitar.
