What Do You Do For A Living?

it's a steep trail

Our brokerage had a luncheon today with a guest speaker who is an expert in networking and he posed an interesting question:  "What do you do for a living?".

What would appear to be the obvious answer "I'm a real estate agent", is the wrong answer.

Every stranger that asks that question probably already knows a dozen agents and may even be related to a few.  "I'm a real estate agent" makes me a commodity, just one of many.  There's nothing compelling about that statement.

So what do you do for a living?  What's the answer?

I've told some clients:

"I'm a real estate sherpa and I'm here to help you on your journey.  I've been up this trail many times and I know the hazards and I'll carry the heavy load for you."

Now there are many things I do for a living.

I study the market so my clients don't have to.  I'm able to tell them under priced, over priced or fairly priced.

I'm the guy that gives them the pros and cons of every house they're interested in.  I'll "unsell" a house just as quickly as I'll sell one.  I'm after ONE home for my clients, and it's THE right one for them vs. an "it'll do" home.

I'm the guy that will respond quickly.

I'm the guy that can bite his tongue to make sure the other side doesn't have an excuse to take offense.

I'm the guy that provides more public information about Cincinnati patio homes than any other agent or company.

You get the drift, what I do for a living?

I take care of people.

Interested in knowing more?  The answers are easy to get, just call me at 513-520-5305 for a chat.  Like what you hear, we can meet in person and get even more detailed about determining the best path to take care of your future home needs!

We look forward to hearing from you!

I think its good to be clear as we do sell homes. Have heard some people with an elevator speech that sounds way too canned. Authenticity usually wins.

Great description, Bill. Most of the people we come in contact with have little knowledge of what we actually do.

Great post and great advice!  I recently had a gentleman tell me “oh you’re a real estate agent - seems like everyone in Lee County is”.  That was a wake up call to me and your post just reinforced that

Great post and comments!

I was at a cocktail party a while back. Sort of an artsy event. There was a woman outside smoking a cigarette with a long cigarette holder, and she took a long puff, blew out the smoke, and asked me - and what do you do?

Oh my, if I told her I was an accountant, she would just walk away. So my answer was - at what time of the day? She took another puff, blew out the smoke, and said - I like that, I like that.

What I was thinking of when she asked me, like so many comments on this post, was that we all do so many things. At the time it was a single parent, I was writing some poetry, I played some music (I’m a drummer) and I went to work during the day, etc.

Today when somebody asked me what I do, I just tell them that I help people with IRS problems, and I hope they never need my services. But actually what I do, is help people get on with their lives, and paying taxes is just part of it. We render to Caesar what’s his because we have a social contract in this country that we live in. But my clients like us, have lots of things that they do, and having them share their lives with me makes me happy that I can help them, in some way or another.

Real Estate in the 21st Century!

It's a great question to ponder Liz and Bill Spear. I have heard similar advice over the years when it comes to how to answer that question. It's interesting when I attend, say, a Chamber of Commerce event where we do our 30-second "elevator speech", and how almost all of the agents/REALTORS/brokers in attendance say pretty much the same thing. I like to throw a little teaser in there like "I solve your real estate problems" or "I will make your real estate transaction experience memorable in a good way"; things like that. Anything to help you stand out, especially in a heavily saturated market like we are in here in the Phoenix-Metro area.

Good morning Bill,

As usual a wonderful post..congrats on the well deserved featured post. A good question to ask and we had someone recently address our office and asked the same question. As a Realtor we wear so many hats and to many its hard to explain. I've always felt we are "problem solvers" whether finding a buyer a home or listing a home. We navigate the waters for clients so we ave smooth sailing.

Well deserved feature post...so many good points. And my favorites:

"I take care of people" and " I'll "unsell" a house just as quickly as I'll sell one."

It's a tricky question to answer...want to phrase the response with enthusiam !  Just saying 'real estate agent' does sound a bit dull, I am guilty of that!

Oh WOW! I love this one:

"I'm a real estate sherpa and I'm here to help you on your journey.  I've been up this trail many times and I know the hazards and I'll carry the heavy load for you."

I take care of people, guiding them seamlessly and as stress-free as possible through the sale or purchase of their largest investment - real property!

Yes, the 'I take care of people' has been my mantra since I was in college getting my nursing degree! LOL

I know I am going against the grain here but it seems to me a lot of you describe the home buying or selling process as: “Difficult, arduous, stressful, difficult, complex, even fear invoking".

And you explain what you do as; “Stress relieving, peaceful, harmonious, painless” etc.

I don’t know about you but that’s what my Dentist says just as he is using the novocaine needle. Ouch!!!

We provide solutions, hopefully the best of solutions that are time effective and financial effective.

We can provide the right solutions because we have been through the supposedly scary “Fun House" house many times whereas the Buyer or Seller probably has not.

Buying or Selling a home should be exciting because under most circumstances it means the home owner is closing one chapter of life and moving on to another.

Liz and Bill Spear  - I wasn't on AR for the holiday but wanted to wish you the everlasting spirit of Christmas with good health, peace, happiness, and prosperity.

I like the straight-forward answer: "I take care of people." And may I add, thank you for taking care of me and others here on ActiveRain who needed your help and assistance. You are truly great and I wish you everything you need for complete happiness.
