Foam roofs have become increasingly popular lately. But what is a foam roof? Foam roofing is done by spraying a thick foam solution on the roof and letting it dry. While this roofing system has been around for some time, it’s becoming more popular now because of the vast number of advantages it has to offer. This article will go into detail about what a foam roof is and what benefits it has that has made it such a popular roofing option.

What Is a Foam Roof? - A Superior Insulating Option

Foam roofs consist of a spray foam. The spray foam is made by combining polyol and isocyanate. These two elements are mixed in a pump before heating the mixture and applying it to the roof using a spray gun. The foam then dries to form a tough and durable roof that makes your house heat proof. Spray foam roofs also provide several benefits to homeowners. These benefits will give you a clear picture of what foam roofs are. They include:

1. Waterproof and Tight Seals

Since foam roofs don’t have seams, they form a tight seal around vents, pipes, chimneys and other oddly shaped areas on your roof. This makes your roof waterproof by decreasing the chances of rainwater getting into your house via the crevices left in the openings. Moreover, foam roofs don't expand and contract with time. That means the tight seal cannot be broken even under extremely harsh weather conditions. Although on the off chances that it does, you can simply fix the leaking roof by sealing it again.

2. Superior Insulation Qualities

This roofing system will provide your house with excellent heat insulation which can greatly reduce your energy bills. Since these roofs don't have any seams, no heat can escape through the roof during winter, and their white color keeps the house cool during summer.

Apart from heat insulation, these form roofs also insulate the house from any external noise keeping your home quite. If you live in a town or an area with high traffic, this roof type will be of great help.

3. Durability

Foam roofs don't wear out easily if they’re well maintained. They should be repainted or re-coated at least once every five years to keep them in excellent condition. Apart from re-coating, you can hire roofing experts to service the roof once every twenty years. If you maintain your form roof on a regular basis, you won’t experience any problems with these roofs for long.

4. Environmentally Friendly

A spray foam roof can easily be installed on any roofing system and is sustainable as well. You won’t have to worry about ruining the environment with landfill wastes from your original roof. The type of materials used are non-toxic, and they don’t emit any harmful fumes during installation.

5. Looks Attractive

A good roof is not only about protection, but it should also add an element of beauty to your house. Roofs made by using foam are very attractive. They can also be customized to match with different styles of construction. The white foam can easily match any house color scheme. You can also customize the roof into different colors, such as tan, beige or light gray. Foam roofs also don’t fade when they’re exposed to UV rays.

Bottom Line

So, what is a foam roof? Foam roofs consist of a thick spray that is applied to a roof that is left to dry. Since foam roofing is quite unconventional and differs from traditional roofing material, it has benefits that other types of roofing don’t have. This includes it being able to be waterproof, leak resistant, has superior insulation qualities, and many more. Therefore, the next time you’re looking to upgrade your roof or install a new one, make sure that foam roofing is one of the contenders.

Dear Kim,

Environmentally friendly?? I fail to see that. In my mind, you always have to think of the full life cycle of any product. When this stuff degrades after 30 years or so, it starts flying around the neighborhood. I for one would prefer not to have that in my garden soil.
