Do you Always Answer Your Phone?

I had a call about 40 days ago while at an inspection (for a REALTOR friend), and the Buyer was with the inspector, so I stepped away and answered.     It was a potential buyer that REALLY wanted to get out of the apartment they currently live in.   I asked her if I could call her back in about 45 minutes after leaving the inspection.   I did, got her info, and what they were looking for, and when I got home I sent a list of lenders to call to start the process.

 

She did say on the phone in the initial call, that I was the ONLY REALTOR to answer their phone.   She called ten agents.   Little did I know, she never left ONE message, she thinks we all should just answer our calls all the time.    

 

I know when I see a number I don't recognize, and my cell phone provider doesn't have a name attached to it (I pay for this service), it usually is Google or a robocaller, or so I thought!     This number had no name either.    

 

With business slowing down, I may need to rethink this strategy.    Will the caller leave a message if they are looking for a home, or to sell one?    I would not want to take the chance and lose out on an opportunity.   What do they say --- this could be my million dollar caller?

Kelly Dixon when I met this client face to face I explained why some agents did not answer her call.   AND if you don't leave a message it is perceived you were a sales call.    She is a first time buyer, pretty young, and had not thought of that.   Since then, she has been a joy to work with.

Buzz Mackintosh I sometimes do answer the calls with no name attached, but does not take long to figure out I need to hang up.  Immediately block the call, and hope they don't call again from a different number.

Georgie Hunter R(S) 58089 it would be much better if we KNEW who was actually calling, and knew if we should answer or not.  That would be too easy.

Maria Sapio wish it could be cut and dried whether we should answer or not.   I have actually had my home phone spoofed calling my cell phone by spammers.

Melissa Spittel I have not heard of that app, need to check it out.    How many potential clients have we passed on by not answering a call.    I am very slow right now, so would like to capture anyone calling needing my services.

Connie Addison great job, and applaud you for securing referrals by being the first to answer.    When looking for a referral agent, that is NOT one of my requirements, but if they don't respond in a 24 period, they are eliminated.   I understand if they are with a client for a couple hours, but then return calls.  I like to see a good Internet presence and look at their web site too.

My kids do not leave messages when they try to call someone. I answer most calls even when I know it is a robo call so that I can be sure and block the number. I know there are thousands of scam, robo call numbers but they have slowed down because I have blocked so many. Just this Christmas Eve and Christmas day I had an agent texting me to show a property, I ignored him (which I never do on ordinary days) since my house was full of family. I text him this morning to see if he still wanted to show and he said maybe another time.

Joan, I got my wish of having my family under one roof for Christmas. We had a big dinner, opened gifts, played games and everyone spent the night. The first time in I cannot remember when that I ignored work. I wanted to enjoy every minute AND I found out that I am going to be a Grandpa for the very first time. BTW the property the agent was calling on was a 1.3 million dollar property! Happy New Year!
