To Disable Comments or Do Not Disable Comments...Pick Your Poison!!

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Mike McCann - Broker, Mach1 Realty Farmland Broker-Auctioneer Serving Rural Nebraska

"Some great pointers", I thought just a few moments ago.

I was reading a blog on Buying a new home and was going to give a compliment and add a couple valuable thoughts to this purveyor of fine information.

And then I saw it...horrors

>>>>>   Comments have been disabled by the author     <<<<<

Mike McCann

I asked myself..."Mike, why would this person disable comments?

Are they afraid of something?"

Then I answered myself and that was scary..." well...doodah...maybe she doesn't want or need your thoughts or the thoughts of other real estate people as she is trying to market to her SOI."

No...I didn't scare myself because I answered my own question...(that is a blog for another time)...but because it makes sense...sometimes to block comments. Doesn't it? Maybe?

When we invite comments...which I do...we take the vast good with the few bad responses. I am okay with that.  But sometimes they distract from the body of the blog.  You also will then have that person's name attached to your blog and if they have a bad reputation...well most of us want to stay away from bad reputations...

But then again, on AR there are so many wise and intelligent (I mean that) contributors that I learn as much from responses to blogs as I ever have reading the blogs.

When you block comments...you miss out on all of this valuable input. And that is an opportunity lost for your clients to learn a new tidbit (almost) provided by you.

I am not sure which is right or if both are...but as for me and my blogs...I will keep the comment section open...unless of course I do not want your input!!  Until next time...

Hi Melanie Cameron Thanks for your comment.  Do you mean you approve the comments on your personal pages or on AR?  Thanks for stopping by.

Followup on your second comment and Jerry's:  I suppose the robot comments can take a good blog and make the comments a problem. Are autoresponders and bots problem on AR blogs?  I ask because I do not know.

Hi Debra Leisek I agree that maybe they had a bad experience along the line or they want the SOI to just focus on their content.

Hi Mike,
I am always disappointed when I want to make a comment and can't.  I'm thinking many of the disablers have been burned by spam comments.  Like you, I often learn a lot from the commenters and it creates valuable interraction leading to meaningful relationship building.   Like most things, there are pros and there are cons.  All things considered I prefer allowing comments on all my blogs.

Hi Kat Palmiotti I will admit that every once in a while I feel like "man I should just block the comments".  And then I don't.

How do some of the bloggers on AR answer all of the comments they get? Some have a hundred comments to respond to...and they take time.

Hi Carol Williams Your one comment nailed it for me...I meet people through the comments and those interactions have led to outbound referrals and an inbound referral.

What better way to understand an agents professionalism and drive than to review they comments they make and the effort they put into them?

I agree with your thought that they don't want inane comments and are just marketing to their SOI. It doesn't bother me -

Hi Richie Alan Naggar Exactly...what if a potential client wants to leave a great remark?  I sometimes go ... "hmmm...they don;t care about my thoughts...I don't care about theirs"...and I move on.

I do that with potential referrals and someone or some business I need to use in other industries...if they do not want my input...well...I will move on.

Thanks for stopping by Richie and for your input!!

I do not see many posts with disabled comments because my comments are usually in reciprocation.

Interesting - disabling comments can mean many things.  Maybe that realtor has shut down for the holidays?  Either way, I never disable comments unless I want someone to visit someone else's page!

I can't think of any reason why I would disable comments. Those who take the time to add a thoughtful comment add so much to the original - and sometimes get a really good discussion going.

Hello Mike - I can see why there are disabled comments on some posts. Re- blogs and market reports are two that come to mind. Hey, it's your post and you're in control of it(more or less).

Hi Roy Kelley   Roy...you do a lot re-posts of some great blogs.  You and a few others like Kathy Streib get me to some great blogs I would not otherwise see.  So thanks for that!!

Hi Jan Green Thank you for your thoughts...I never gave the "shut down" theory much thought...but you and a few others have enlightened me to new reasons why to turn off comments.

Hi Kevin Mackessy I would agree on the surface but as I really started looking at it...it may be more just certain people who do it. Still a curious decision to me. Thanks for stopping by!!

Hi Marte Cliff I so agree with your comment.  Just the comments on this Blog proves the point and the value of comments.  Some high powered folks have left comments for sure...(you being one of them!!)

Hi Michael Jacobs I agree with you...maybe. My thought is this...if they are doing a market update, etc. and turn off comments ... might they be missing a possible lead?

And yep...you are right it is their content...
