Inspirational thoughts for 12/19/18

by Patricia Feager

Our minds influence the key activity of the brain, which then influences

everything; perception, cognition, thoughts and feelings,

personal relationships; they're all a projection of you.

--- Deepak Chopra

PREMISE

Feedback and/or comments on Social Media is a way to improve business relationships with others on ActiveRain. How others see you is a perception. Perception, they say is a reality. A public blog post is designed for more than just members on ActiveRain. A Member's Only Blog could be viewed by Brokers, the Board, State Association, and State Real Estate Commission, including other agents from your community. Following are suggestions for providing positive and social feedback:

  • Respect colleagues
  • Tap into discussions if asked with positive remarks
  • Be enthusiastic

Remarks left on blog posts serve as a feedback source. It may lead to friendship, a business relationship, or referrals. If you can't say something nice, please don't say anything at all. A good idea is golden! Praises when deserved are GREAT!

UNINTENTIONAL BAD HABITS

  • Interject with unsolicited opinions from your different point-of-view
  • One upmanship
  • Being forceful when you disagree
  • Being overly critical

AWARENESS

  • Learn more about new members to ActiveRain
  • Notice what people like and other social interests
  • Points of interest are intriguing
  • Learn to discern between your strengths and weakness
  • Be you!
  • Give credit where credit is due
  • Foster openness and trust
  • Notice whose missing - reach out to others
  • Limiting followers may eliminate business opportunities/referrals

Your blog should be what every new member and existing member should read and understand before sitting at their keyboards. It would be nice for other social media such as FB too

Awe! Thank you Scott Godzyk. As Social Media continues to be a way of life, it's a good reminder to all. When I think about we see and hear on the news today with the digging going back 30 years or more, it will be very easy to get a lot more about people than they think and that's the reason why everyone has to think before they input information with keystrokes and send!

Have a very Merry Christmas and great New Year!

John Henry and all. I heard from Bill Spear. He was kind enough to provide enlightenment and wisdom on social feedback. Please see below:

"I'm in the mountains of West Virginia visiting family, so on delayed response time :)

Here's the dividing point for me:  if a post is clearly intended to the consumer to attract business, unless something is clearly an ethical/legal issue, the post doesn't need contrary comments that undermine the writer.

If the audience is other professionals and not the consumers, IMO anything is fair game for criticism as long as it's done civilly (and you're willing to risk the consequences of potentially burning a referral bridge)."

I always enjoy seeing my fellow kind at work...(any work) for how can we leave a mark, memory or sign our life signatures if not going about it? To know someone is to love them, the very basic beginning of it all and the beauty of it? Anyone can do it! Begin or continue but this is that time to do Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP

Some really good points listed in this article as I see the many mistakes made by business owners on social media on a daily basis.

Some have pretty much ruined their reputations without even trying hard.

Thanks for sharing this.

Patricia, a thoughtful and genuine post as always. I'm happy to see it featured! I've never been interested in engaging in anything questionable. Have always felt it doesn't accomplish anything but, negative and hurt. Be kind or just move on. There are plenty of posts to leave a positive comment on.

Kevin Mackessy - You're right! I don't think a lot of people have filters and it is embarrassing even if it isn't directed at me. Here on AR there were times I was embarrassed about some comments and just hit the delete. In doing so, I let it go!

Thank you ma'am! When it's public, there's absolutely no excuse for not being charming.

Candice A. Donofrio - My parents taught me it's okay to be yourself at home. When you're behind closed doors here at home, you might not like the rules but this is where you practice obedience and learn discipline. BUT! When you're in public, you always be your best self and cause no embarrassment to yourself, others, or this family.

I like what you said, there's absolutely no excuse for not being charming.

Wonderful advice and gorgeous photo too, Patricia! Bill and I have had this conversation before about public-facing posts and those that are meant for members-only. Discussion/debate/negativity (whatever you want to call it) should really not happen on public-facing posts.

Sadly, no matter where the posts are seen and the debates occur, it seems that people have more trouble being kind than ever before. Negativity (really 'nastiness') almost seems rampant on some of the social media sites. AR is almost like a safe-haven, isn't it?

Dec 21, 2018 09:19 PM
Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP

Debe Maxwell, CRS - I would like to think ActiveRain is a safe-haven but have learned and still learning not to put my guard down. I don't like being double-crossed or put in a tight spot to feel uncomfortable. This is why I believe etiquette on social media is so important. In sales, you have to be competitive but not to the extent of destroying other people. Professionalism is a number one priority. It's good that you have Bill to discuss topics like this. I have a feeling when it comes to compassion and empathy, you two are the perfect match.

Patricia, found this on Michael Jacobs' blogpost about being kind. Last year, I saw the movie, Wonder. It is a very powerful story, to say the least. One of my takeaways that had a profound effect on me (and I've shared it over and over again) is a rather small moment in the movie. A teacher has his young students read a precept every day in class. This particular day, a young girl reads: When choosing to be right or being kind, choose kind.

I loved that, it made me cry. Even wrote a blogpost about it. So often it's much easier to push the ego to the top, and say "I told you so", or "See? I was right!"  at the expense of someone's feelings. Criticism, ego, prejudice, being judgemental can cause monumental damage.

Choosing to be kind is the ONLY choice in my book.

Gayle Rich-Boxman Fishhawk Lake Real Estate - I have heard that Wonder is a good movie but never saw it or if there was a book, never read it either. It sounds like it would be worthwhile to see. I do agree with you, Criticism, ego prejudice, being judgemental can cause monumental damage."

Patricia, it is a MUST SEE. Beautifully done, and it also deals with many issues: bullying, facial disformity and what comes from that, intelligence and how it's perceived, breaking down barriers, family relationships, death of a beloved dog, and making a difference no matter what you are handed in life, how to shift an entire mindset by being a Wonder.

Yes, sadly, there are 'double-crossing' people everywhere. We just have to trust but, verify. And, yes, Bill is one of those who are good-to-the-core - one who can talk me off of the ledge sometimes!

On another note, watching the Rose Parade yesterday, I saw the Flower Mound HS Band performing and thought of you! I wondered if you had heard them in person - they were quite good.

Happy New Year!
