Dr. Elmo

You may say there's no such thing as Santa, but if you ever find yourself in Marin County watching a competitive running race there's a good chance you'll say you saw a really fast super veteran putting down the hammer, likely with an ear-to-ear grin on his face.  And you and grandpa might later come to believe said runner was Dr. Elmo Shropshire.

As good fortune would have it, my wife and I came to know Dr. Elmo and his wife, Pam, through the Tamalpa Runners, the running club with the richest history here in our home county just across the Golden Gate from San Francisco.  Sure, we'd heard his holiday hit favorite "Grandma Got Runover by a Reindeer" just like everyone else, but that wasn't our intro to them as "real people."  Instead, the local track workouts, races and social events allowed us to get to know them as just a couple of kind folkswho positively contribute to the club and are fun to be around.  In fact, I think my wife has a crush on Elmo, but that's a story for when too much eggnog has been drunk...

Elmo recorded his hit song in the '70's and had little expectation that it would go anywhere at all, but after a San Francisco DJ played it, the calls started coming in and it's been that way for nearly 40 years.  Elmo got the "doctor" in Dr. Elmo from his years as a veterinarian and his wife, Pam, is quite the race photographer --- often catching the club runners in action at the famous Dipsea race each June.

For a light holiday week, I couldn't think of a better story than that...

Happy Holidays,
