Ireland day 10

We headed for Waterford today.  We enjoyed a coast ride to the historic port city, known for its exquisite crystal.  Vikings settled in the eighth century and bestowed the name "Vadrafjord," and proceeded to exact tribute from the native Celtic tribes of the area over 200 years.  Anglo-Normans brought English rule in the 12th century, and under King John Waterford became Ireland's most prominent city.

That afternoon we toured the Waterford Crystal Visitor Centre.  I do appreciate the high cost of Waterford Crystal after seeing the artisans at work.  The fine cut glass was first manufactured here from 1783 to 1851.  Production ceased when the British government, which ruled all of Ireland at that time, imposed heavy taxes.  (Sounds like the same problem Casa Grande has at keeping big business).  It revived in 1947 and now employs many artisans who take up to ten years to learn the crafts of glass blowing, cutting and engraving.

We checked into the Fitzwilton Hotel and enjoyed free time on our own.  That evening we had dinner (great Salmon) at the hotel and then took the coach to Dunsmore East and the Pub Hayes.  This was a real fun treat.  I don't have the CD at hand today to tell you his name but the entertainer was a kick.  Those Irish do have a sense of humor and know how to have a good time. Dunsmore East is a great getaway, probably help if you have a healthy bank account!  It did have alot of charm, I could spend a weekend there!!
