Daytime Activities to Ring in 2019 in Olympia WA

Trying to stay awake until midnight on New Year’s Eve is always a struggle for me so if you are like me, here are some fun ideas to celebrate the new year on December 31st and January 1st.

Start New Year’s Eve off with a long walk at the Billy Frank Jr. Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge.  This is one of my favorite places to visit year-round to get in a long walk.  There are boardwalk trails as well as level gravel trails.  The fresh air and the lookout for all kinds of birds get rid of cabin fever.  The refuge is located at I-5, exit 114.

Then grab a bite to eat at another one of my favorite spots in Lacey, WA – the Curry House located at 8765 Tallon Lane NE.  This is a family-run Indian food restaurant and it is delicious.  The chicken tikka masala is excellent!

After a filling lunch, take the kids and head to downtown Olympia to the Hands On Children’s Museum at 414 Jefferson St NE for their Noon Year’s Eve.  From 9 AM to 5 PM, there will be a ball drop every hour, lots of activities for the kids, a parade, costumed characters, dancing, and music.

While downtown, take a stroll around Percival Landing along the waterfront and check out the Childhood’s End Gallery at 222 4th Ave W in Olympia.  The gallery features contemporary Pacific Northwest artists.  You’ll find paintings, glasswork, woodwork, jewelry and more.

On January 1, 2019, really shake the winter blues by doing the Polar Bear Plunge at Long Lake Park in Lacey, WA.  The event starts at noon and the plunge is at 1 PM.  You can enter Long Lake Park at 2790 Carpenter Road SE.

That should get your 2019 off to a great start!

And if you are planning on making a move, call me today because you’ll want to get a jump on the spring real estate market.

Happy New Year 2019 Olympia WA

Francine, we do try to stay up until midnight but it can be a struggle. I don’t think I’m up for the polar bear plunge but might be interesting to watch!

Hi Joyce Marsh, Daytona Ormond Beach Florida - there is no way I could do a polar bear plunge myself.  I'm sitting here in my office with a space heater running at full blast!

I don't remember a year that I didn't stay up to see the ball drop. We always make sure to see it and I always get emotional.

Sounds like a great itinerary you created!

I expect there are plenty of people who will appreciate this list in lieu of staying up till the wee hours. Love the photo - I so enjoy visiting wildlife refuges when I get the chance.

Have a wonderful weekend!

You've outlined a jam-packed itinerary Francine. We will likely stay home, watch a movie - eat take out Chinese food - and fall asleep around 10AM. Someone in the neighborhood will shoot off fireworks at midnight, we'll wake briefly and wish each other a Happy New Year - and fall back to sleep. I know, we're an exciting couple. Lol. Happy New Year to you!
