Is the ice safe to play on?

The ice may not be safe.

Depending on how you get on the ice.

It is said that the ice is NEVER safe.

That the thickness can vary a lot.

Today, 2 vehicles, a car and a  4 wheeler fell through the ice.

Both on the same lake.

They fell through in the same area they had been driving on a few days  ago.

Ice fishing is the big draw, but still it is not always safe.

A nice Northern pike from a few years ago.

It tasted delicious

Dear William,

That is one nice pike! Definitely careful on the ice. Not easy to fish those vehicles back out.

Good morning, William Feela why would anyone drive on a frozen lake? I've seen tents on a lake and that's bad enough.... risky business!

I haven't been fishing in years.  The chances of getting me on a frozen lake is slim to none at least.  Hope you have good luck, when you go

Lakes can be tricky. I can't imagine driving on one and having the car fall through. I hope no one was hurt.

Good morning William. Hard to be safe all the time. Then again you have to try! Some are just avid about ice fishing! Enjoy your day!

The rain did weaken some of the top layers of ice.

The severe cold coming in a few days will make a big difference in the thickness  of the ice

William Feela - Since the time I was little, my father taught me to honor and respect Lake Michigan and never take the ice for granted. When I lived around the Chain-O-Lakes in Northern, IL so many people took chances, such as what you described. I hope you will consider doing a follow-up post on hypothermia.

I've never seen a Northern Pike up close and personal.  They are a very interesting looking fish.  As for driving on ice, I can't even imagine it!

Falling through ice is one of my biggest fears and I would never walk on ice. I guess being in Virginia we aren't cold enough to make the ice thick enough, so I don't trust it anywhere. Well, possibly Antartica! But, my luck, there would be a heat wave going through when I chose to walk the iced lake.

Paul,

I remember those ice warnings from my days of living in Minnesota.  Ice was usually tested before driving on one.  A
