Writing About Local Events? A Few Tips
Many of us like to write about events in our area. It’s a fun way to show off your city and you just never know who will call you.
However, if you do write about your local events or places there are a few tips to make sure that you’re not wasting your time when getting your message out there.
A Few Tips
Put important information above the fold!
Newspapers (remember them?) knew that we readers like it when it’s easy to see what we want to see.
When I began writing local posts, I tended to “stage” them with the address, time and date centered at the bottom of the page. All of the calls I was receiving wanting to know if I was the Delray Downtowner or if I was still open were because the readers, in looking for a contact number, called the number under my profile photo.
Make the contact information, including the date, stand out.
Again, most readers want to be able to skim the information so make sure that the date, time and any contact information can be seen. Make it Bold, or a Larger font, if necessary.
Include a photo of the event or place.
We can’t attend every event but when you do, you can take your own photos as well as offer first-hand tips for your reader.
Take a video
Let’s face it, videos are the way to go! This is a no-brainer because the video doesn’t have to be lengthy, just informative.
Offer some tips
Helpful hints that you can share with your reader gives your post another layer that lets your reader know that you are the “local expert.”
So if you can share where the best parking would be, or what will make it more enjoyable for them, you will probably have return readers.
Add a disclaimer
Let your reader know who you are. Then let them know that times and events may change and that they should contact the organization for further information.
