Breaking News: The United Van  Lines National Movers Study has been published. As a Beverly Hills Realtor and a Relocation Specialist, I look forward to this report with anticipation as well as hope and trepidation.

"The data collected by United Van Lines aligns with longer-term migration patterns to southern and western states, trends driven by factors like job growth, lower costs of living, state budgetary challenges and more temperate climates," says Michael Stoll, economist and professor in the Department of Public Policy at the University of California, Los Angeles.

California

Total Inbound: 45.6%

Total Outbound: 54.4%

Income

INBOUND                                   OUTBOUND

3.25%          $0       to     $49,9998.    19%

8.60%     $50,000 to $74,999               12.38%

14.77%    $75,000 to $99,999              15.81%

23.86%    $100,000 to $149,999         24.29%

49.51%    $150,000 or more               39.33%

Age Ranges

INBOUND                                OUTBOUND

27.03%     <18 to 34            15.05%

19.16%       35 to 44           15.99%

15.85%     45 to 54            14.92%

19.29%       55 to 64          26.41%

18.68%       65 or older     27.62%

Primary Reason for Moving

INBOUND                            OUTBOUND

10.13%      retirement      22.00%

5.41%          health         5.88%

17.03%        family         24.94%

9.90%     lifestyle         19.81%

                                                  62.49%             job          41.19%

California fell into the Balanced States, what that means is the residents moving inbound was about the same as the number moving outbound. I would have preferred to be in the top inbound states, unfortunately that was not the case. I attribute it to many factors but primarily due to  the high cost of living we were not in the top ten states for inbound  movement.

Looking at the Outbound numbers I attribute it to many factors as well but primarily the cost of living again is the main culprit in my analysis. Looking at "retirement", "health" and "lifestyle" can all be attributed to this factor.

Hello Endre: It would not surprise me that people with money are leaving because California taxes are so danged high.

I read this with great interest. Surprised Florida no longer on the inbound top ten. I also found that DC was #10 another quandary. Tooooooooo many politicians??? cheers cvc

Endre I would have expected the outbound number to be higher for CA because of the cost of living and taxation out there.
