Monday Motivational...It Begins With One Step

With everyone already headed out of the starting gate for 2019, I was reminded of a story I shared years ago.

If you’re like me, when there is a goal I have in mind or something new I wantjust one step to try, I want to get there NOW.

My tendency is to want to go from Point A to Point Z in one giant step.

But that’s not always possible or a good thing, is it?

A friend that we met several years ago told of us his struggle to get his health back after experiencing a heart attack while diving out of the country. He was actually underwater when it occurred. By the way, he was in his late 60s at the time.

He was life-flighted back to the States and managed to survive the whole ordeal.

But then came the recovery. Just walking to his mailbox at the end of his driveway was a major effort. And because of that, he put on a lot of pounds.

He realized that this was not how he wanted to live the rest of his life. With the help of a good friend, he began baby-stepping his way to the life he wanted.

First, the mailbox, then down to the corner and adding steps each day.

Here’s what he told me…

You have to begin with one step at a time. You may not get where you want to be but you’ll be a lot further along than if you’d waited until you could take that giant leap.

Whatever you want to achieve, wherever you hope to go, don’t be afraid to baby-step your way there.

Put 40 years of experience to work for you

That is frightening to consider a heart attack while SCUBA diving. A man died last week at a beach on Big Island, he was in his 90's and swimming, and then he was floating face down. Isn't that creepy? Not a bad way to go, though.

As for baby steps, I learned the hard way that at my age I can't just drop to the floor to do a pushup without suffering severe consequences.

Peter Mohylsky you're right, we learn something even when we fall down.

Gita Bantwal Thank you. Hope you're having a great week!

Same here Barbara Todaro And you know...you didn't start with those heavy weights the minute you hit the gym. You did it step by step.

Gabe Sanders When I started at the gym years ago, someone suggested that I start with a light weight and work up. Same thing with the treadmill and bike. I was ready to jump in but I'm glad I listened to him.

Scott Godzyk when I took tennis lessons I was frustrated because I wanted to be one of the Williams sisters immediately.

Mike Baltierra that's it exactly!  The world we live in wants instant gratification.

Grant Schneider exactly. It's easier when we can look at a project and break it down in bite-sized pieces.

Carol Williams I'm in that category but there are times when we have to be willing to go step by step.

Will Hamm our friend said it seemed like an eternity just for him to walk down the block.

Kathy,

Wonderful post...and sometimes for many that first step is the most difficult one.  Admitting that one needs to do something about it is the beginning. A

Morning Kathy.

Yes ma'am you'll never get out the door, unless you get off of your backside and take that first step.  For me, I don't move as fast as I once did, but I will get there.

Kathy, this is often the best way of helping to create change, through a story that we can relate to, understand, empathize with. Your friend is an inspiration and we  can all learn from each other on how to be better humans....one step at a time.

How timely, I was having this discussion with a person yesterday who told me that skipping steps is so ineffective. Fortunately, they are nearing the victory steps of that path- but it would have not been possible on their poing A to Z shortcut.

Thank you for this great post and thoughts. I so appreciate this advice.  This method of baby steps describes my recovery after back surgery. 4 days in the hospital, out on a walker, eek!!  2 steps forward and 1 step back but you have to keep going and don't get discouraged.  Your friend gives great advice!
