Words that make me say "Ouch!"

Ah yes. More cringe-worthy moments from Marte Cliff. Great for a laugh.

Original content by Marte Cliff

Sometimes a word in a sentence just jumps out, hits you, and makes you think "Ouch!"

Such was a word in an email I received not long ago. It was a forward from a friend, and it had a fine message. The trouble was in the introduction.

It said "This bares repeating." Ouch!!

The "ouch" problem is getting worse day by day - probably due to the number of people ouch who are now using voice recognition software to do their typing.

Granted, some of these errors are due to wrong word choices, but others are either the right sound but wrong spelling or a complete misunderstanding on the part of the software.

I have one client who has me help with some of her emails. She's often in a hurry, so dictates messages to me when she's driving. Most of the time I can figure out what she was trying to say, but sometimes I have no clue.

Here are a few more "ouch moments" I've collected from websites, emails, and blog posts:

"Replace the headshot photo on your site and on your social media profiles with one that shows you laughing, or wearing a crazy hat, or with your hair died."

Please advice me.

Thanks for the advise.

Please call myself.

Being in that position is not good for yourself.

I past out fliers.

It was a waist of time.

It through us all for a loop.

Appraisals can through you a curve ball.

I’ve considered it and whole Hartley disagree with you. (I've written about this one before - and still get a laugh from it.)

Rain in your enthusiasm.

That was just a tall tail.

...gather their personal affects

...the airs of the estateface of a cow

...wholly cow (for holy cow)

                                                                                            Yep, she's wholly cow!

Be careful! Spell check isn't going to catch these for you, because there's nothing wrong with their spelling. They're just the wrong words.

Meanwhile, your clients and prospective clients will be confused about your meaning - or they'll figure it out but think poorly of you.

Proofread what you wrote before you turn it loose  in the world.

Totally agree - it serves one well to be well read and therefore less likely to make readers say Ouch!

Hi Joe

Marte's post is a great reminder about grammar, spelling and just plain decent writing so people understand and are not turned off. But then all her posts are great reminders for us all!
