Open houses can be an absolute blast! Of course, this is the topic I picked for this Saturday because I am sitting in an open house right now. I have a plate full of home made oatmeal, chocolate chip cookies and a binder full of information on the neighborhood, market, and lenders ready to go.
When I speak with people considering purchasing a home in the Columbia area and they are still on the fence, I recommend they spend a Saturday driving around and stopping by open houses. I give them a couple of my business cards to give the agent holding the home open. This tells the agent that they are already speaking with a Realtor. Open houses are a great way to get a feel for different neighborhoods, as neighbors often stop by, and see what the homes look like. It also provides a low pressure opportunity to dip your toes into the housing market.
I often hold open houses for our sellers as it serves to potentially find them a buyer, spread the word that their home is on the market, and we find that the internet lurkers who have been watching the house tend to act a bit faster when they realize that any buyer in the area is getting an opportunity to see the house.
Many weekends growing up my parents would drive my siblings and I around neighborhoods just to explore and see what the houses were like that were going up. These were some of my favorite times as we got to explore partially built homes, resale homes, and imagine what we would want in our next house. Plus, it's free!
