Photos of Low Tide in Kona on Old Airport Road

By
Real Estate Agent with Elizabeth Anne Weintraub, Broker DRE #00697006

We got to the beach out on Old Airport Road yesterday with about an hour left of low tide. My plan was to hit the beach earlier but we had commerce to attend to. More specifically, we were on a search for a mortar and pestle. I made grilled shrimp on skewers a few nights back, yes, I actually cooked dinner for my husband, and I needed a mortar and pestle to smush kosher salt into chopped garlic. Every so often I discover we do not have an essential item at our vacation house.

Some people just stared at us when we asked if they carried such a thing in their store. They asked: what is it? One Asian store in Kona had woks, rice bowls, chopsticks, seaweed, all sorts of stuff, but no mortar and pestle. Nothing at Island Naturals. They suggested Pier I but no such luck. If you'd like to know where we found it, the answer is Target!

Still, by the time we reached Old Airport Road, it had not yet rained, despite a low cloud overcast. Plenty of time to dig around in tide pools to see what we could find. We didn't disturb anything, of course, just shot photos. You can see more photos and read about that adventure in my personal blog today at this link: Old Kona Airport Beach at Low Tide.

Good morning Elizabeth. What a great shot. I wouldn't think it would be that hard to find a mortar and pestle.

Elizabeth, not being a huge cook, had no idea what that was.   Cool photo of the low tide.

Sheila Anderson I didn't think it would be that hard, either. Especially since it's such a common thing in Asian cooking.

Beth Atalay You and I would have fun scouting out low tides. Not everybody enjoys that activity.

Joan Cox Surely you have seen a mortar and pestle on cooking shows or in somebody else's house or a restaurant?

Don't watch cooking shows, not a cook!    And don't think I have.

Aloha Elizabeth - your post sent me off in many directions.  One of those places was not Target but it's rather appropriate that it turned out to be the right spot and likely less expensive than Sur La Table or Williams Sonoma. Probably just as effective too.

Good old Target. Ha. How smart to turn a mundane shopping trip (to find a kitchen utensil) into a fun adventure. Nice photo of you and the hubby enjoying the tide pools. I was looking at the photos thinking you could have ground up a few of those mussels in the mortar and pestle. Eeeks. Murder at the beach.
