A poet called this time of year the "bleak mid-winter".
Early Spring can begin on the Pacific Northwest Coast by February...and the days are already getting longer.
This mid-point in January is a good time to plan a garden, create a repertoire of soup recipes, watch old movies (comedies like Local Hero or My Favorite Year or Some Like It Hot), take day trips, meander art galleries, declutter the house...January is a perfect time to follow the rhythms of this four season region and to savour one's personal downtime.
Some daytrip ideas? The B.C. Museum in Victoria, tea at the Empress, Victoria's Art Gallery. Coffee stop at True Grain Bread in Cowichan Bay. Beachcombing at Parksville's Rathtrevor Beach. An overnighter means storm watching at Uclulet/Tofino. Skiing at Mt Washington. Catch a ferry to one of our neighbouring Gulf Islands...each has their own signature. And...it's always great to return home to Salt Spring.
January...a month of beginnings. Take advantage....
