Get tax legal this year!

I saw an advertising for medical marijuana that said something like - get legal for 2019!

We can say the same thing for not filing tax returns. If you have a filing obligation, then you need to file!

Here's what IRS publication 501 says:

If you are a U.S. citizen or resident alien, whether you must file a federal income tax return depends on:

  •          your gross income,
  •          your filing status,
  •          your age, and
  •          whether you are a dependent.

It also states - There are also seven other situations when you must file a 2018 return.

And finally - The filing requirements apply even if you owe no tax.

This is all in the first paragraph of - Who must file.

Sound difficult? Not necessarily.

I find  IRS publication 501 a very useful publication. Check it out!

Dear Tom,

For people with relatively simple returns, Maryland allows them to do it online. Not difficult or time-consuming. For our profession, I just hire someone, who specializes in the field. He usually saves me his fee somehow, because I do not have the time to keep up with all the changes.

Good comments, Dorte!

Filing for some folks is more difficult than for others. There are about 7 million non filers that the IRS has identified, and I heard they will be going after them.

Tom, a good reminder and people need to know they need to meet their tax obligations in a timely manner.  (I am sure the IRS is not going to cut anyone slack just because of the partial shutdown.)

I'm not sure how much slack they would cut, but that's like playing Russian Roulette with the IRS.
