Off-Beaten Path Tour: How Vanilla is Made in Kona

By
Real Estate Agent with Elizabeth Anne Weintraub, Broker DRE #00697006

It may surprise you to learn that vanilla beans come from vanilla orchids. I know, right? If you're like me, you can hardly wrap your head around the fact a vanilla bean needs to go through a process to become vanilla extract. On top of which, you might not know that you can make your own vanilla extract by adding alcohol to the beans.

And we have a vanilla factory right here in Kona, which is open for tours.

When I think about it, we use vanilla all over our houses. From hand wash to lotion to air fresheners. You can read more in my personal blog today and see all of the amazing photographs at this link: The Vanillerie Tour in Kona Ends With Ice Cream.

Aloha, Elizabeth -- more surprises and a vanilla tour trip should reveal lots of new discoveries.  Meeting and getting to know new people like discovering information is not too scary for me these days.

How said to be hesitate to make friends for fear of losing them. Rather short-sighted attitude. As for vanilla - love the taste and the aroma. I would enjoy this tour too.  ( I made vanilla extract one year, it does work, but not worth the hassle I decided)

Elizabeth, have not been to a vanilla factory, and like a coffee plantation, I would think this process would be so interesting!

Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD Vanilla is amazing. It is super complicated; there is nothing "simple' about vanilla.

Joan Cox The people behind the Vanillerie have something like 6 other successful businesses they run, even a eucalyptus farm.

Hi Elizabeth... now that would be my kind of tour. I love vanilla... the taste, the scent! All of my perfumes are predominantly vanilla based. And when I burn scented candles they are also vanilla scented.

Nina Hollander I know, right! How in the world did vanilla ever become such a plain Jane in some people's minds? Vanilla is certainly not bland.

Interestingly, Elizabeth, vanilla scent is also considered a "universal" scent in that the fewet objections to a scented room is when it's vanilla based. I always would burn vanilla candles when I sold my own homes and always had feedback about how great my home smelled.
