Yesterday Southeastern Wisconsin was “blessed with” our first “real snow”….we have had just a little bit earlier in the season …and it quickly melted with temps climbing back up to the 40’s and 50’s…those days are gone and depending on where you are in the area…you were gifted with 7-12” of the fluffy white stuff. That doesn’t mean the world ends or work stops…and showings abounded.
Last year it was our honor and pleasure to help a couple from New Jersey make Wisconsin their new home as “Tom” started his new engineering position at Harley Davidson. We have shared meals…they cook…we cook and been to restaurants from Nacco Tacho and famed pizza places to seafood specialty places.
Tom’s wife was out of town and while he knows his way around their newly remodeled kitchen in Wauwatosa…we all decided to enjoy an evening celebrating my family’s Ethnic cooking at one of our favorite restaurants. My mother’s parents were Croation and my Dad’s Bohemian….so off we went to “as close was we can get” to have dinner at Old Town Serbian Gourmet House. The menu is reminiscent of Grandma’s kitchen…remembering fondly the strudel dough stretched over the kitchen table like a table cloth…the dumplings, lamb, Sarma, (Stuffed cabbage rolls) many family favorites.
We rented limos when my Mother turned 80 and picked up her friends and had dinner there...complete with a huge apple strudel instead of birthday cake, We have celebrated some holidays there as well.Tom had not experienced some of these entrees and appetizers and loved the new combination of flavors and textures that they offer with their “no short cuts” home cooking variety. Click here for a peek at their "Grandma's kitchen" kind of menu....choices are difficult...and all delicious !
One of my favorite entrees is Burek…not one I make at home as I do some of the other choices, It is layers of filo (thin pastry) dough with your choice of spinach, cheese or beef or some combination of these fillings. It is a large whole kind of “pie”…..and such a treat. Tom followed my lead…we each had one after Serbian salad, baked feta and special Serbian sausage sampler David & Tom enjoyed. ,
...there was a lot for each of us to take home, David opted for the goulash served with vegetables and homemade dumplings.
Portions are generous…no room for the strudel or palace (crepes) that are such a great way to end a meal…should have started with them !
Dinner was complimented by their own house wine we all enjoyed.
If you find yourself in the Greater Milwaukee area know that your trip will be more complete...your appetite more than satisfied...with a visit to Old Town Serbian Gourmet House.
