Hacked Emails And Passwords by Microsoft Regional Director Breaks the Story

Serious stuff for all to be concerned about.  It goes back over two years and over 773 million people's emails and passwords are up for grabs.  A compilation of many smaller breaches that was discovered by this Microsoft Director.

First you need to check all your email accounts to see if they have been breached and then check current and past passwords.

Check all emails here:  https://haveibeenpwned.com/

Check your passwords here:  https://haveibeenpwned.com/Passwords

I have found two of my accounts have been breached.  None of my passwords have been breached but it is again another wake up call to use 16 character passwords as a must.  Never, ever use the same password on multiple accounts.

If you find you have been breached it may be from a past breach and it is assumed that these breaches go back as far as two years.  You still may have your accounts at risk.

Also, never share your passwords to your accounts by EMAIL...always use a Google Doc or a secure attachment.  Especially with your webmaster, etc.  and change them too periodically.

Just words for the wise and my friends.

Data breaches are treacherous for all of us and our personal information.

Thanks for this Ginny. I will have Bernie check to see how we're doing.  It's scary to think of all the unsavory characters out there trying to scam us. I'm happy to see the star.

Excellent advise Ginny. Passwords AND logins should be changed regularly and monitored regularly.

Here's an idea. Did you know that your mailserver keeps a log of exactly every time you have logged in to your email? If you keep a manual journal of every login, date and time and then compare with your automated mail server login log, then you'll know if someone has access to your email account. You can get your automated login log from your provider. Often, it also provides the IP address from where your email was accessed from.

Thanks for sharing this Ginny Gorman. I'll be checking mine soon.

I try to every 6-8 months anyway but it can be a bit of a project with accesses from different devices...

I'm a bit concerned, Ginny.  So let's see if I understand this properly ... in order to check to see if I've been hacked (pwned)... I have to go to an unfamiliar website... enter in my email address, which of course says that I have been hacked... and then enter in my password... sorry... my spidey sense is mad-tingling, and I just ain't a gonna do it.

Hi Ginny Gorman - As I started reading this, I felt the same way as Alan May - As much I a would love to check it out, I am not going to risk that the URL is a black-hat site or has been hacked.  I did get an email once with an old password and they wanted to shake me down for a $5000 in bit coin ... if I didn't comply they would erase my computer.  The extortionist said they used a logger key to get my keystrokes for my passwords on a porn site. I knew it was BS at that point! LOL! (not funny at the time...)

Nothing ever happened.  I got my husband involved and he copied all the header information and the raw code and sent it to the FTC.

Also - If you have your computer backed up ... you can erase it yourself!  Between changing PWDs, McAffee software and back ups and a pretty good eye for spam, I feel comfortable with my security.

BUT, I appreciate your sharing this info. I am just very skeptical.

I’ve been pretty lucky with not getting hacked and all that stuff. We all have to be careful out there and change our passwords like we change underwear: often.

Hi Ginny:

Thanks for the link! Our security, or lack of, gets scarier all the time. I am pretty good about using a wide range of password variations and try to change some (not all) regularly. I could do better, no doubt. I will be checking your link.

Hmm, I am kind of torn between believing it or not too.  I don't use the same passwords anymore, and am careful on important sites.

Interesting. I've changed and rechanged my passwords so many times I have to keep a list to keep them straight!  Thank you for the warning and thoughts.
