National Hug Day
I got a notification on my phone that today is National Hug Day. Here are a few fun facts about hugs.
Did you know that a hug is the only gift you can give that you immediately get back?
A 20 second hug along with 10 minutes of hand holding reduces the harmful effects of stress including it's impact on blood pressure and heart rate. This makes sense since hugs are known to reduce levels of the stress hormone, cortisol.
Studies show that we need 4 hugs a day for survival, 8 hugs a day for maintenance and 12 hugs a day for growth. Right now I'm still working on survival!!
Did you know on average people spend an hour a month hugging. That doesn't sound like a whole lot, but if you consider the average hug lasts 10 seconds, that's a lot of hugs!!
If you ever had any doubts about the importance of touch, children that aren't hugged have delays in walking, talking, and reading. A quick hug has a near immediate effect on health by lowering heart rate, reducing fear and inducing a calm state of mind.
So, get out and hug someone today!!
