How, Where and When Do You Check Your Email?

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Gold DRE #00697006

One of the ways I astound my Sacramento clients and provide superior service is to respond immediately to emails. That is easier to do when you receive emails in a more timely manner, too. Our phones have helped a lot with that. Especially when we're out in the field. However, try reading a long email on your phone; it is very difficult.

Now, try to do it on an Apple Watch. Some emails won't even appear on an Apple Watch.

The other difficulty with reading email on your phone is sometimes you can miss the CC participants, so you might not respond to all. Although, the way around that is to simply always reply all.

You can read more in my personal blog today about my extreme methods of dealing with email at this link: How Often Do You Check Your Email?

Since I'm almost always at my desk during business hours and often here at night, I check my email every time I get a pop up telling me there's a new one.

I do not envy all of you who have to read email on a phone - I wouldn't like that at all.

Elizabeth, like you, I like to respond ASAP to emails as they sure can multiple and then takes forever to get through them all.

Elizabeth, I check my email all the time. You said it, an immediate response is a part of providing superior service. I've been considering an Apple Watch and didn't realize some emails don't come through on one, thank you for sharing that insight.

Great advice. Staying connected to your email and phone is a huge responsibility. Some people are geared this way and others not so much. When you decide to take some time off, make sure you have someone else responding to keep the momentum going.

Agree, it is important to check emails frequently. Sometimes though, an email, of import, will get stuck in spam. Hard to know if someone doesn't give you the heads up to expect it...

Barbara Todaro Yes I am of the same mindset. I drill it into my team members, too. Respond immediately. I don't care from whence it came, be it an email, text, voice mail, get back to the person right away.

Lottie Kendall When I am in Hawaii, I work umtil 9 PM in California because I turn on my computer around 7 AM and turn it off at 7 PM. I turn off all electronic devices at 7 PM. If somebody wants to get in touch with me after 7 PM at night, they will have to do so by ringing my doorbell. Nothing happens after 7 PM that can't wait until 7 AM, unless maybe an erupting volcano.

Endre Barath, Jr. Good for you for getting rid of it. I want my husband to do away with ours but he leaves an answering machine on it. It's nothing but spammers.

Marte Cliff I hear ya, I spend most of my business hours in front of my computer, so I do respond right away. If I am on the road, I check in, although my phone does download every 15 minutes, with some time sensitive stuff, I can't wait 15 minutes.

Joan Cox Being Apple-based saved my sanity as everything is downloaded everywhere at once now. I spend a lot of time deleting the unnecessary. My goal every night is an empty In-Box.

Amanda S. Davidson If you have a separate phone number for your Apple Watch like I do, you will always get emails. The problem is the Apple Watch can't display all of your emails. It will tell you who it is from, though, and mostly it is images that don't come through. If it's just text, though, you can read it.

I check my email only 3 times a day. Morning at 7am, noon at 12:30 and evening at 7pm. My business partners, associates, clients and prospects are informed when I open my emails, so if it's extremely important I'll reply to text messages.

I stopped reading emails throughout the day when I learned I wasn't being efficient or productive with my time. I also don't answer my phone when I'm F2F with a person or a planned activity.

I check my emails on my cellphone and my desktop.  Interestingly enough, I realized yesterday that my laptop has remained in its case without activity for quite some time.

Elizabeth, great article. I come to Real Estate from owning heavy tuck dealership. Not answering the phone in that business (24/7/52) is not an option EVER!!! I read the full blog, and I would like to know who you use for email.

I check my email every chance I get, Elizabeth. On my computer when I'm working in my office. On my phone when away from my office... often sitting in the car at a red light. I doubt I go longer than 30 minutes without checking to see if there's something there unless I'm flying or sleeping or out for the evening.
