While you may already be aware, the cost of mailing 1 oz. first class through the U.S. Mail will be going up on January 27, 2019.
The cost of a Forever Stamp will increase from $0.50 to $0.55 — a ten percent increase — so if you make your purchase before the 27th you can effectively save yourself 10% or more on future mailings. Depending on how many times a year you mail things, the savings could be significant.
Perhaps you should take the opportunity to buy enough stamps to last you through a year or two. If you do, the savings could add up. Consider how many times you send Birthday cards, Graduation cards, Thank You cards, Get Well cards. In addition to cards, do you regularly correspond by letter? Do you mail bills? Tax returns? Let's not forget Christmas and other Holiday cards.
It's up to you, but this is the greatest single percentage increase in the cost of first class mail in almost 30 years. In 1991 the cost of postage went from 25¢ to 29¢. Future increases are almost a forgone conclusion. Only three times, going back to the Civil War, has the cost of first class postage dropped. The last time it dropped was from 49¢ to 47¢ in 2016; however, the rate was increased just months later.
HOW TO SAVE EVEN MORE ON POSTAGE
If you happen to have a Discover Card here's a way you can save an extra 5% right now through March 2019, if you take advantage of Discover Card's quarterly 5% bonus rewards, which this quarter is at Grocery Stores. Giant Food & Safeway, two grocery stores which sell stamps in the Northern Virginia region and that have stores easily found throughout Fairfax, Alexandria, Arlington, Falls Church, and Prince William Counties in Virginia — and surrounding areas — sell the Forever Stamps in books of 20 and don't attach any markup on them. Unfortunately, the same can not be said for all area grocery stores. If you buy your stamps at a grocery store and have activated the 5% bonus on your Discover Card you'll be able to buy your stamps for an effective price of 47.5¢ each.
