Grateful For Those Who Guided The Way!

Real Estate Agent with GreatWest Realty DRE# 00827565

Trade secrets are common practices that major corporations implement in order to sustain their success. They often travel great lengths to preserve the proprietary ingredients of their products.  Pepsi, McDonald’s and Kentucky Fried Chicken - to name a few.  Writers can copyright the written word and songwriters the notes to their tune.

Occasionally, real estate professionals will debate the pros and cons of sharing trade secrets.

Thirty seven years ago, in November 1981, I remember thinking I was entering the really "cut-throat" business – Real Estate!

There were about a dozen experienced and seasoned real estate agents in the first office I was associated with. I was the rookie.  Imagine my shock when I asked the question, "What's the interest rate these days?"  The answer was an incendiary 18%.  I wondered how I could sell real estate in a market like that?

The agent at the desk behind mine coaxed me to open an MLS book and search for the 1 in 20 houses, which had an assumable loan - Homes with low interest rate, and little equity.  They were the properties, a buyer with a little cash for a down, could assume the existing loan, or take it “subject to.” And, if need be - possibly put on a second for a few years!

Without that 3-minute suggestion from that very experienced and helpful agent, my "career" would have been significantly handicapped getting off the ground.

Soon after, another agent walked me to the supply drawer, and helped me assemble a Buyer package, and a Listing package.  Again, it was other experienced agents in the office, who mentored me to my beginning success.

I remained in that office for the next 10 years, until it closed its doors to the California real estate bust of 1991.  But, over the years, I repaid those helpful agents, by helping them tend their escrows, when they went on vacation, or by letting in an occasional appraiser, home inspector, or termite repairman, etc.

As far as tricks of the trade, or tools of the trade - What I've learned over the years, is there are certain basic truths to what we do to be successful in this business.  However, it is our personality, and unique characteristics that ultimately set us apart from one another, that will have us appealing to one client, and perhaps not another!

I always make an effort to share my "tricks of the trade."  More often than not, I've received more in return, which occasionally I evolve into my own style and presentation.

At the end of the day, I think we are all the better for it!

Most all those agents, who mentored me in those early days, have passed on to the Great Open House in the Sky! But, I remember them all with enduring appreciation and fondness!

Great post, Myrl!  Early on in my career in real estate seasoned agents showed me how to go after HUD/VA Buyers and I did.  I learned and practiced so much I was called the HUD/VA Queen because I was aggressive with turning renters into buyers.  I try and give back by sharing my strengths even with seasoned agents on tech stuff.

Myrl, You were fortunate to have some great help, when I started I had a few classes in my brokerage but I was pretty much on my own. It's great to have a good mentor.

What a nice story Myrl Jeffcoat. In 33 years of doing this, i have seen many agents come and go. The bottom line is those that shared, helped, guided and were open to working together, lasted while those with secrets, closed minds and going solo did not.

If people in an office are willing to share tips with each other and to help each other the whole office benefits. It never hurts to help others, as I like to think, it is loading the good karma into my wheelbarrow for use later.

Hi Myrl Jeffcoat , Congratulations on the well deserved feature. I remember those days of high interest when you started.  It was a time that we all want to forget. Your gratefulness shines through this entire post.  That is what makes you who you are. I am sure many of the agents you have worked with are thinking those same kind words about you. They are lucky to have you as a mentor and colleague.
