Not your typical week for a tech savvy Beverly Hills Realtor: Endre Barath, Jr.
I have learned from my days in the military, to have a backup plans for virtually every situation. In addition, since I am a chess player, I usually like to plan six to eight moves ahead. Now with that said, a long overdue change took place on Monday. We eliminated the Land Line Phone and at the same time requested an upgrade to Fiber Optic re-wiring of our home. The Phone was immediately disconnected, and installation of Fiber Optics was scheduled for Thursday. In a way I will miss the phone with all the sales calls that we received. I used to check every couple weeks on the answering machine and once in a while even had newer agents leaving voicemails about wanting to list our home.
On a personal note our new addition to the family Carmen had a very difficult day and night Sunday into Monday, so she had to be rushed to the Vet for some emergency fluids, diarrhea prevention, throw up prevention and the list goes on and on. Hence now she is back, temporarily at the Lange Foundation recuperating.
What could make like life more difficult for an Internet savvy Realtor in Beverly Hills? Well, the answer is easy: when the emails are not syncing on the smart phone! Hence, you can imagine me rushing to the Verizon Store to get help. Needless to say, the service person was not ready to fix the problem like the previous person I dealt with the last time I had issues. Instead this one downloaded the Tech Coach App.
I rushed home so I could be in front of my laptop for uninterrupted email communications, while planning on fixing the smart phone problem. I could write a post about the three and a half hours that transpired with the attempted repair. I will just mention one 45-minute gap’s response from the Tech Coach:
Endre: Are you still there? What happened? I will stay on let me know please what is going on?
Tech Coach: I do apologize my system shut of and I couldn’t get it to come back on. (Typos are the Tech Coach’s)
After three and a half hours or so tinkering from the back end of the phone by the Tech Coach, she could not get the “Outlook” email corrected. Finally, she suggested that I reach out to Outlook. After my request, she gave me a 1.800. number to call. At the same time the regular email that was not syncing every 10 minutes as it was originally set up to do , she managed to deactivate that as well and was unable to fix it back to functioning mode again. Hence after all this ‘help’ nothing was working by the end of the day on Wednesday.
Thursday morning, bright and early I implemented plan B. I called Godaddy my website host and email provider. Hence about an hour and a half later both emails were fixed, and I was sold a two-year plan changing from the “outdated email platform” to a new improved “email platform”. The idea was that the high-tech phone is basically incompatible and is prone to glitches like this with the outdated email platform.
Smart phone back in action, gratefully AT&T was running late, hence I was able to get price reductions on two of my listings as well as update them in the Multiple Listing Service. This delay also allowed me to send my buyers new listings and do comps as well. You know the activities we do on a day to day basis.
Well late Thursday afternoon the AT&T Technician arrived, and he realized it’s a bigger job than anticipated. Now with that said, he calls for a backup, as it is getting dark now. Three hours later he is at the point when everything is done, he just deactivated the old Wi-Fi and turned on the new system. He parked his van ready to run and go home. Not so fast, data is not transmitting to the new box an hour or so later, he determined that there is a problem on one of the “poles” too late at 8pm to get a poleman out.
Friday, great news, we have Fiber Optic, high speed Internet as of this afternoon. Now the rest of the real work can be done before the end of the day!
At least for now all is well for the weekend. BTW it is good to be back on the World Wide Web with all my tools and the best part is at lightning speed😊!
