We were ready and we survived the cold!

Surviving the severe cold was not hard.

1st we put 30 gals of water in 5 gal. pails for non-drinking water.

We had 5 gal of drinking water plus some individual bottles.

Plenty of easy to make food.

Extra propane tanks (2)

I heat with wood or gas.  Enough wood to last the winter

and enough gas for 3 weeks.

Generator.

Kept in a warm shop and tested every month.

The outside boiler is set to be plugged in so that the pumps circulate

hot water to the house.

I have 2 200 ft extension cords and 2 100 ft ones.

I can plug in the freezers and refrigerators if needed.

Making sure everything is ready to use is key.

It does not happen over night, but start with the simple things

When I was a kid . . . oh, no . . . not that, LOL . . . but we did not get schools closed because of subzero temperatures. That was just the norm. Like walking 5 miles to school uphill and barefoot in the snow. Back then the only reason to cancel school was too much snow. Not like the wimps today. Well, actually, perhaps a few parents sued the school when their kids got frost bite.

Looks like you're ready to hunker down, William.

It sounds like you were really prepared.  I always keep bottled water on hand, and I have fire wood to burn in my fireplace, if need be.  There's always plenty of food at my house.  The one thing I don'thave is a generator.  We've had a couple power outages that lasted awhile, and a generator would have been handy.  My range is electric, but I have reasoned I can fire up my barbeque (propane) and cook on my covered patio, If need be.

Hi William- you are absolutely right about this kind of readiness takes some time and planning. Stay warm.
