Many years ago, I got a call from an elderly customer. She had heard about me through the work I do at Surrey Services for Seniors. She lived on her own in a second floor condo, could I stop by and let her know what she needed to do to get her home sold.
When I arrived, I had expected to meet an elderly single lady, who was most likely a little frail. She had told me she was in her late 70's.
Well, did I get a surprise. Firstly, she had a wonderful attitude, full of energy, spry and very humorous. She was part of the Surrey Services Choir group and she enjoyed performing very much.
Looking around her condo it became obvious that some things needed to be put away. She was planning to move to Cleveland to be near her son and his family as they needed some help. Note, they needed the help, not her, I had quickly realized she was absolutely fine where she was and this transaction was going to be a little hard for her letting go of her home which she loved.
My background is in antique ceramics and I offered to pack up all her breakables for her, Trudy came by and made some staging suggestions, and we soon had the place looking great. It ended up selling quickly and as we approached settlement she said she wanted to take us out for dinner for all our help.
We arrived to pick her up and out she comes wearing leather pants and a leather jacket. Rocking it! We both looked at each other and said we hope we have that much energy and go when we are her age.
I learned just because someone is elderly, they are only as old as they allow themselves to feel. This client felt young and acted young. She rarely complained, and when she did, there was often a very good reason and she maintained a very positive attitude throughout.
