The Chinese New Year Cultural Fair was this past weekend in Highlands Ranch. When we can take time out of our busy Highlands Ranch property management schedule, we like to attend the local events known for putting on a good time year after year. The Chinese New Years Celebration is no different on that front. A 4-hour event at Southridge, the celebration of Asian art and culture features an array of educational art and craft displays and items for purchase. The event was both free and sold out, there were plenty of happy participants in attendance. The event was put on by the Highlands Ranch Cultural Affairs Association and the SCFD partner with Great Wall Chinese Academy to bring the annual Chinese New Year Cultural Fair to life in Highlands Ranch. Speaking of the Great Wall Chinese Academy, their talented performers put on a show with an exciting cast of characters and scenes, painstakingly recreated scenes involving exciting dragon and lion dances, beautiful Chinese folk dances and amazing Chinese martial Arts Kung Fu demonstration. Punctuating the rest of the event was the well prepared choral and instrumental musical performances, which had heavy symbolism to them. The Lion Dance traditionally only performed at New Year’s and other festivals is thought to scare away the bad luck. It is a good way to start the year when you make every attempt to course correct your new path for the year. Firecrackers and drummers are used in tandem to keep away any evil spirits that are around. The colorful lanterns are all part of the Lantern Festival which ushers in the full moon and marks the end of the two-week New Year period. Lunar ne wear is now behind us and everyone welcomes the Year of the Pig.
