If you know me at all, and you've spent any time at all with me in person or on the phone, I say"what" a lot.
I'm hearing impaired. I can hear most things, it's progressive so it's much worse now at 59 than it was at 29, but I still manage. In person, one on one in a quiet area, I may not even wear my aids. In a large crowd, in the car, in a restaurant, I need my hearing aids. Even with the aids, hearing isn't easy for me in noisy places. I have to pay very close attention to whomever I am speaking to and it can be tiring. I'm grateful for the kindness of most people who are very patient with me. I have very little trouble on my cell phone and men are generally easier for me to hear than women because it's a high-frequency loss.
WHAT??
If you haven't tried it yet and you struggle at the movies (it's loud but you can't catch all the words), most theaters have closed captioning devices. It makes me so happy to be able to enjoy going to the movies and not miss a single word of the dialog.
It's actually a good question to ask people. What? It shows you care to understand them. What can also mean "you really didn't just say, did you?"
