On this day, Feb. 6th in 1815, the state of New Jersey issued the first American railroad charter to John Stevens.  At the age of 27 he was appointed the rank of Captain in Washington’s army during the War of Independence and then became Treasurer of New Jersey.  Stevens turned from law and politics to the study of steam navigation, then in an experimental stage.
