The One Thing That Really Dates a KitchenI'm sure there are several things but this one thing really reveals how old a kitchen is... The pop-out window in the kitchen. We've all seen them, heck we might even still have one, but you know what I'm talking about; those pop out glass windows in a kitchen, usually over the sink, that homeowners can put fresh herbs or flowers in. But, they tend to be more of a hassle and a catchall than a convenient place for your fresh herbs. And one of the best things is they are a completely cheap and easy fix. However, leaving that popout window in the kitchen really dates the home. These were popular back in the 1960s through the 1980s, but really most people just want a nice looking window.

This isn't the only thing that can data kitchen but it definitely is one of the first telltale finds that the kitchen has not been updated. Of course, people can update the cabinets, counters, and flooring, but if they leave that popout window thinking somebody will appreciate it, they're really doing themselves a disservice. Unless you really like it yourself, it's time to change it out.

So what are some other outdated items?

Asbestos seems to be one of the most popular outdated items and if you look up and around you'll see popcorn ceilings asbestos in the walls and lead paint, especially in homes that were built prior to 1973. However, removing asbestos from the house can be extremely costly and dangerous. You really have to decide if removing it is worth the investment.

Linoleum, tile counters, and ceramic sinks, not the farmhouse style, are also very outdated. Most buyers won't like tile counters because they're not a smooth and even finish. Granite and even better, quartz is really the prized material right now. Quartz is much easier to manage and coming in at around the same price as granite, is easier on the maintenance as well.

Kitchens are one of the top things that buyers look at so having an outdated kitchen means the rest of the house will simply get overlooked. It's important to update your kitchen if you're planning on selling and you might as well start by taking out that popout window.
