There Must Be Something In the Water:
Summit County Life Expectancy Is The Highest in the Country
We couldn’t be more proud! For several years Summit County has consistently held the number one position for highest life expectancy across the entire nation. A study in the United States was conducted which examined both the highest averages and longest lifespans.
While the average lifespan in the United States is about 79 years old, their findings showed that life expectancy in several counties throughout the country were much higher. Summit County resident life expectancy is an impressive 86.8 years young! This is an almost 20 years difference between the county with the lowest life expectancy.
Our neighbors of Pitkin and Eagle County are close contenders at 86.52 and 85.94 years respectively. What is it about the Colorado Rockies that has our residents living to such a ripe age?
Living in the mountains makes you hardy. Full-time residents who have lived here for the majority of their lives enjoy strong cardiovascular health. Living at elevation is a nice perk, but it’s also the activities that folks love in Summit County that lends to this impressive lifespan.
Our community has the lowest levels of obesity, blood pressure, and diabetes. Summit has also been fortunate enough to hold the lowest cancer mortality rate in the country for the last 30 years, with next to none being from lung cancer. We can lend this all to the vast amount of outdoor recreation available and the healthful adventurers that our beautiful valley attracts.
It’s a well-known fact that exercise increases longevity and wellness and we love exercise in Summit County. You are more likely to see senior residents of our community getting together for a group hike than a knitting class (though we can find you one of those too).
A regular day for any resident could include hiking, paddle boarding, kayaking, mountain biking, fishing, skiing, snowshoeing, or some combination of all these activities plus more. We revel in the fresh air and magnificence of our region and make it a habit to show appreciation at every chance we get.
In addition to our enthusiasm for fresh air and stretching our legs, Summit County also has one of the lowest percentages of unemployment. According to a U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics report, the unemployment rate in Summit County was a mere 1.3% in 2017.
This is all to say, we enjoy a unique and incredible quality of life in Summit County and it shows. Living in this region gives you the best of all worlds. You can enjoy magnificent views of the Gore Mountain range, hiking trails in your backyard, easy access to world-class skiing, water sports on beautiful Lake Dillon, and a deep sense of camaraderie with folks who love the outdoors just as much as you do.
