Expert Tips on How to Get Your Home “Show-Ready!”
Have a Garage Sale
Ask yourself the following questions when trying to decide whether or not to keep something:
Is this item something I use regularly?
If not, is this item something I love?
Would I buy this today if I saw it in a store?
Am I holding onto this because I think I should love it?
Am I keeping this item out of obligation?
Is this item worth the time it takes to clean it and store it?
Could this space be put to better use?
Do I have multiples of the same thing?
Could something else do the same job?
De-Clutter, De-Personalize
When you home is filled with STUFF—your stuff—it is hard for potential buyers to picture it empty, and it’s even harder for them to picture their own belongings in the crowded room.
Take everything off the counters (kitchen counters, bathroom counters etc.)
Take everything off the fridge
Hide laundry, personal items and ongoing projects in places buyers won’t see when they come into your home—like inside the washer and dryer or under your bed
Take down all family photos
Take down anything in your home which isn’t neutral—anything that could potentially offend any certain type of person, like antler mounts on the wall
Light a candle or open a window to remove cooking smells
Leave before the showing agent and potential buyers arrive!
Keep your Home CLEAN
Deep clean the entire home before you list it
Pick up after yourself and your family—make it a habit of putting things away as soon as you are done using them
Avoid kitchen messes with one-pot recipes
Make sure to vacuum before a showing as most people will be taking off their shoes
Employ a routine of tricks to make your home look cleaner than it is:
Point window blinds upward or – even better—open all curtains
Turn on all the lights
Throw messes into attractive storage containers
