Back in the Saddle Again (In My Dreams) Part 2
Should you be visiting Houston this Friday, February 22, and think you have gone back in time when cowboys and cowgirls rode in on horseback, don’t worry.
You have just become part of an annual feature in Houston...the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.
And on Friday, one of my absolute favorite parts of this tradition is when the 12 Trail Rides ride in and converge in Memorial Park. They will camp there over-night then participate in the Downtown Rodeo Parade.
When I was younger, I always wanted to be a part of the Trail Ride. Now my behind and preference for not staying outdoors overnight in a tent place me in the position of observer!
The Ride has grown to 12 Rides with over 3000 participants. The Mission Trail Ride will travel the furthest from San Antonio, and Valley Lodge Trail Ride travels the shortest distance from Brookshire TX.
And if you are a fan of the old show Wagon Train, then you’ll know that each Ride has a Trail Boss. And, they’re not just figureheads either. They are responsible for the safety of all riders and animals as well as obtaining permission, permits, and police assistance along their route. You can learn more here.
BTW- If you are anywhere near a Trail Ride, please be mindful that the horses may be tired and easily spooked. Respect the riders and the horses.
