Back in the Saddle Again (In My Dreams) Part 2

Should you be visiting Houston this Friday, February 22, and think you have gone back in time when cowboys and cowgirls rode in on horseback, don’t worry.

You have just become part of an annual feature in Houston...the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

trail ride

And on Friday, one of my absolute favorite parts of this tradition is when the 12 Trail Rides ride in and converge in Memorial Park. They will camp there over-night then participate in the Downtown Rodeo Parade.

When I was younger, I always wanted to be a part of the Trail Ride. Now my behind and preference for not staying outdoors overnight in a tent place me in the position of observer!

The Trail Ride started in 1952 with 4 men riding in from Brenham, TX, which also is the home of my favorite Blue Bell Ice Cream.

The Ride has grown to 12 Rides with over 3000 participants.  The Mission Trail Ride will travel the furthest from San Antonio, and Valley Lodge Trail Ride travels the shortest distance from Brookshire TX.

And if you are a fan of the old show Wagon Train, then you’ll know that each Ride has a Trail Boss. And, they’re not just figureheads either. They are responsible for the safety of all riders and animals as well as obtaining permission, permits, and police assistance along their route. You can learn more here.

BTW- If you are anywhere near a Trail Ride, please be mindful that the horses may be tired and easily spooked. Respect the riders and the horses.

Kathy I am with you.  I am not into a sour behind and sleeping outdoors.  Being a spectator would be my preference

Grant Schneider what's funny is that a lot of people think that Houston is like what you'd see in a western movie and everyone rides horses.

Sheila Anderson yikes! Had I been thrown from a horse, I'd probably be fearful as well.

Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD I'm with you on that! I would consider it if I could have a hot shower and climb into a comfy bed at the end of the day.

Ron and Alexandra Seigel And as tradition here in Houston, the weather in February is cloudy and drizzly!!! My brother's band will play for one of the BBQ cookoff teams (their 15th year) and he's hoping the tent won't leak.

Thank you Roy Kelley Hope that you and Dolores are doing well.

Susan Haughton I haven't been to the rodeo in so long. Not sure if we'll go this year but it's just fun being in the city for it.

Michael Jacobs I will never forget the first time I realized that not everyone says ya'll. I thought it was a part of everyone's vocabulary.

That sounds like a lot of fun.  Even though my father never rode a horse, I am quite sure if we had lived in Houston, he would have wanted to do this. Always fancied himself a cowboy at heart.
