The Naming Of Plants: Does This Look Like Inferno To You?

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with Napa Consultants DRE00893924

We have often wondered who comes up with names for drugs, plants, and nail polish colors?  That has often baffled us.  One of our clients was one of the senior marketing executives who named "Viagra."

He told us they just sat in a room and threw around ideas.  That is how they came up with the name. There is no logic behind it (that is made up later) no rules, and it sounded good.

This past weekend we cleaned up our coleus patch by the front door.  After we replanted and re-potted, we had a bare spot for a new plant.  This is our latest acquisition for the bare spot.  It is called Inferno!  Does this look like Inferno to you?

I kind of like the name, Inferno, for that plant.  The plant itself reminds me of bricks.

The leaves have a flame like shape and there are a lot of them.  Makes sense to me.

Hi Ron and Alexandra Seigel - I like the name!  I think it fits just find and is easy to remember. It is like the name "firebush". One of my favorites.

Sheri,

Are you referring to the "firebush" in a succulent? or some other plant?  I have one in a succulent, and love it.  A

Good morning, Alexandra and Ron - I do find the practice of naming fascinating.  Who am I to judge where a fire of imagination may strike? It works and likely many more could work too.

When you Google the name, you see a lot of variations of inferno coleus.

Nice plants to have!

Roy Kelley interesting observation, which opens up a whole interesting subject, as to who is the final authority on names. A

Michael Jacobs as a child and later reading bits of Dante's Inferno, hell was not a lovely place, contrary to the beauty of this coleus...We come back to perspective and impressions from the past.  A

Joe Pryor the color definitely was the decision factor, and I would look good with our other coleus in the pot.  A

The branding of plants and flowers may be a new opportunity for you!

This one, from one of my posts today, has many names...

Myrl Jeffcoat you make an excellent point.  I may have to find infernos to visit, I just have images from Childhood and having read in college bits of Dante's Inferno.  A

Gabe Sanders it will reside in a pot with other coleus that have a hint of that rusty color too.  It has been too cold and quite windy to attempt to plant it.  We have not used the barbecue because of the winds that are clocked at 10mph...A

Nina Hollander I like that you detected a"whiff" in the name...my idea of hell is being on a cruise ship with the captain morning greeting, "Good morning, Celebrities!".  We could not turn the damn thing off.  LOL A

No, it does not conjur up "my" vision of an inferno. Copper flames? Maybe. Regardless, fun to think about names and how they fit, or don't.
