Fighting Doggie Ear Infections

By

For years I fought ear infections with my Lhasas and if you have a dog with long floppy ears, you probably have too! I would have to say in most cases, the ear infection won. Then I met Dr. Jacqueline Obando who is trained in both the traditional and naturopathic veterinary sciences. In one quick visit she gave me this simple secret to fighting ear infections. Here it is…

#1. Make a cup of green tea and let it cool to body temperature.

#2. With a cotton pad dipped in the green tea gently clean the inside your dog’s ear out to the best of your ability.

#3. Pat it dry with a clean washcloth.

#4. Using a tiny spoon and holding the ear open as much as you can, pour a half a teaspoon of boric acid into the ear canal (this is a slightly granular powder – you can find it at any drug store); work it in by massaging the ear for a minute.

#5. Repeat twice a day for a week. It works like a charm!

Since I’m not a veterinarian and I don’t play one on TV, ask your own vet about this first! If they haven’t heard about it, contact a homeopathic vet like Dr. Obando. http://www.mercyvet.com

Susan, good information to have.  I've never had a dog with ear problems, but will keep this in my database for future reference.  Who woulda thunk something so simple could be the answer?  I think if we all paid more attention to our grandmother's and their sage advice, we would be better able to manage a lot of our human and canine problems using good old home remedies.

Oooo! How CUTE they are!

I have a black lab who just had a yeast infection in her ear. I went to my local feed store to find some meds for her and they told me to  "skip the vet's expensive treatments and just use use the OTC treatment for women's yeast infection" I admit I took my dog to the vet, and bought the expensive meds this time. Now that I know what I'm looking for I'll try the OTC treatment next time.

Hi Terry: Isn't it amazing how some of the good Old Wive's Tales out preform the pharmacuetical big boys?

Roberta: It not only works better but it works faster.

Susan, Thanks for the info - just joined the dog group. Our beagle seems to constantly have ear infections... He recently had to have a very hardened area lanced inside his ear and take medication- poor baby.. He suffered with it for a good while, we took him to the vet 4-5 times and they didn't find it until they sedated him and looked.. I will have to try this.. God bless,

Cheryl,

I went through the same thing with my dogs. When I took Molly into Dr. Obando she had the worst ear infection of her life. When she would shake her head a googy tar like substance would literally fly out. After the first day of treatment it was practically cleared up and was gone completely by the 3rd day.

Dr. Obando said that she had sucessfully treated dogs that that were on the verge of having their eardrums removed. I believe her. Good luck!

Good Morning Susan! It is going to be sunny down here for the next 4 days, yeah!

We have a Lhasas as well her name is Belle, she is 4 years old and smaller than most at 8 pounds and she is also all white. We have not had any ear problems with her yet, but we will bookmark this for if we ever do.  We also have a 5 year old Cairn Terror (lol) named Brodie.

Wish I had read this a couple months ago.  One of my dog's ears puffed up like an apple turnover.  Apparently it was ear mites.  Nothing worked and now it's shriveled up and looks like a califlower ear.  Wonder if this treatment could still have some positive effect?

Pat and Scott: Can you believe it? The sun actually came out this weekend!

Casey: It's like pennies a treatment.

Alison: I don't think it could hurt although it's designed to fight yeast infections by drying up excess moisture in the ear.

Oh my, I think this is what I have been waiting for. I have two westies and the one is always having ear infections. I have taken her to the vet so many times and she has been on so many antibiotics and ear drops. She has also had a couple cortisone shots which I am not sold on. I read somewhere where you can use one third rubbing alcohol, peroxide, and vinegar. I tried it and it helped for a little while but it dried her ear out so much that she was itching it and she would get it sore again. I have been using an ear wash that I got from the vet every 2nd to 3rd day and it seems like it is getting better but it still looks dry.

We have changed her food so many times thinking that she had a food allergy and that hasn't really helped. We have always had her on some form of organic and all natural food and I was really thinking about maybe switching her back to Science Diet (that was what she was eating when we got her as a puppy).

Susan if you could would you let me know what food you are feeding yours? Also, what is the brand of green tea that you use? I would like to try this but I want to make sure that I am using the same as you since you have had success.

I just joined this group tonight too. Isn't it funny that this is something I have been looking for and I think I have found something that will work on a real estate blog.

Thank you so much!

Lisa: Thanks! They are little rascals.

Teresa: I feel my dogs Innova and as far as the tea is concerned you can just use any brand of green tea. I get mine from Trader Joes. Let me know how you do.

Thanks for the info, Susan. Right now her ear is doing fine since I have been working on it for the past 2 weeks. But I will try the green tea when it flairs up and let you know how it works.

I have a friend that takes her cats to a homeopathicvet here and has great results with treatments that they prescribed. Before your post I was actually thinking of trying her vet. There has to be a better way of controling these ear infections than cortisone and antibiotics. I don't believe in loading anyone up (even humans) on this stuff.

Take care!

Dear Susan,

Thanks for the wonderful tip. My Standard Schnauzer, Beaux has been fighting a constant ear infection for over a year. I have tried the drops and goo and nothing worked. Then I switched vets and he said it was a food allergy. I switched food (Duck and potato dry food) and voila two weeks later no infection! If we get another ear infection I will try your remedy for sure. Thanks again!!

Maureen: They are a dorable but sometimes they can be little devils. If I dare to leave a magazine lying aroud they will tear it to shreds.

Cheryl: This is one of my favorite tips because it works like a charm.

Susan, this is great advice. We have 2 Goldens who love to swim all summer. They have both battled ear infections and yeast infections. Swimmers Ear works well as a preventative, but I will try your remedy next time before an expensive trip to the vet. Thanks.
