Moving Tip #2...Let Your Pictures Tell a Story


If you’re anything like me, your memory will take you just so far. With our recent move, I didn’t want to rely solely on what I thought I would remember so I enlisted the camera on my iPhone and an easy editing tool that is part of the iPhone editor to help me when I began setting up our new home.


In my desire to edit and simplify our new life in Houston as well as keep the moving costs down, I got rid of a lot of things. However, I knew that between packing, moving, and then setting up our new home, I would forget what items I’d kept and which ones I’d donated.

So I took a picture with my iPhone of the item I was not taking with me and using the editing feature on the phone (Markup), I placed an “X” on it or made some other notation on it.


It may seem a bit obsessive, however, now that I’ve been unpacking everything, it has really helped me. The item below, for example, is one that I had been on the fence about taking. It wasn’t until a few days before we finished packing that I decided to give it to a friend.


And sure enough, I was thinking about that bowl when talking to my niece and couldn’t remember what my final decision had been. I thumbed through my photos and saw that it had not made the cut.




I also took photos of what I wrapped and packed in some of my boxes.


This may seem extreme and a bit anal retentive but it really helped me organize my move and remember what the heck I did and didn’t move.

What a great idea, Kathy.  Last year I significantly cleaned out my closets, etc.  I gave a lot of things away.  And, to this day, I often forget what I gave and what I kept, because I reorganized a lot of stuff at the same time.

That was a smart thing to do!  When I have to take things apart and put them back together, I will usually take a picture of how it looks before I start taking it apart, haha.

The items I get rid of are sold through Facebook yard sales, so I have a record there of whether they sold or not.  And I've definitely had to go back and double check on a few things.

I basically got rid of anything I didn't need to survive. I still have way too many clothes under my bed. I did buy somethings I didn't actually need. Even though I got rid of a lot I didn't take pictures of what I kept,sold or donated.

Hi Kathy Streib - I think it is a great idea.  I use my iPhone for things I donate. The last time I moved, this was not a handy feature but I would definitely use it if I move again.

Having moved some 17 times in my life, I can appreciate this kind of organization. I was very organized as I watched them pack boxes, and label them and I would go behind them and make additional notes on the boxes. 

But this is another great idea!

That is a great idea Kathy! It gave me another idea: I learned in my staging certification to put a post-it or sticker on everything in an occupied home that the client should remove or pack prior to staging. The practice is just too cumbersome, but photos with and "X" over items to be removed would be much more efficient and effective! THANKS!
