All of the world's very tallest peaks, and everything above 8000 meters, can be found in the Himalaya. But anybody know the tallest peak outside of Asia? Kilimanjaro, Denali, Mt. Rushmore? Seriously, that honor goes to Aconcagua in the Andes, which rises to a height of 22,837 feet along the border of Argentina and Chile. It's a very climbable mountain and its most accessible route rates as a strenuous hike, with almost no technical climbing required. But variations on the north side of the mountain can be more challenging and the South Face route is a massive commitment reserved for the world's best alpinists who, not surprisingly, are able to manage the very real objective danger of the route as well as the physically imposing wall itself.
I earned a place in a record book nobody keeps by being the first person in the new Millennium (Jan. 1, 2000) to summit Aconcagua. But about that aforementioned South Face, that was the awesome view to which I awoke on summit day and after having been trapped out in a storm the night before. It's a long story and one that could have ended way worse, but the gods smiled on us over those ungodly long hours at 22,500 and now I just have a bunch of fond memories of getting up and over and back down relatively safely.
If the mountaineering bug ever hits you, and altitude is your bag, Aconcagua is a world-class experience and one I "highly" recommend.
Because it's there,
