The Extremes of Winter Scenes in the Country

Every day that I am on vacation in Hawaii, I am grateful that I am not in the miserably cold weather in Sacramento. Especially more so when my sister sends me a photo of the back-breaking job she just went through in Minneapolis to shovel her front sidewalk. I thought of that yesterday when I met up with my friend Loli to go to the beach. For some reason, Kuakini was blocked off, and we could not go to the beach we wanted to visit. Instead, we headed across Ali'i Drive and turned south in search of another.

On foot is a big of a pain but sometimes it's the best way to discover. We located shoreline access and zipped down the path only to be confronted by a plethora of wedding guests already seated and waiting. Oops. Not our beach for that moment in time. As we marched back up the hill, a woman in an old car pulled along side us to ask about the beach. Loli engaged her and asked if she would give us a ride to Kahalu'u Beach.

She hopped in the car. Hey! I had no cellphone, no money, nothing but my car keys in a waterproof bag. How would we get back, I asked? See? I think about those things in advance.

Loli says, we'll get a ride from somebody or else we'll hitchhike. Well, that was an adventure waiting. Turns out the driver was from New York with a home in Humboldt (north of Sacramento). We met another friend of Loli's at the turtles beach. Found interesting shells in low tide, went swimming, watched the turtle flippers wave at us when caught in the surf. Our new friend, Anita, did drive us back, thank goodness.

What a wonderful adventure! I love that kind of spirit - no phone, no money - it'll all work out. And it did!

Your sister is a mail carrier in Minneappolis?  Yikes!  That is a dreadful job in the best of physical condition.  When she hears your stories of Hawaiian life, she must dream of a counter position opening up there with USPS.

I'm glad that you enjoy it there, Elizabeth. It shows. The photos tell the story and I'm sad that your sis has to live in pain. Damn postal service.  We have some weird winter mix going on here too - it's an odd winter. However, with that said, I do enjoy visiting Hawaii, but quickly get island fever.  Always happy to head back home. Fortunately Bernie feels the same...he just gets bored with the whole tourist scene and same old great weather, warm water, and sand. We're a match made in heaven - not paradise, obviously.

hi Elizabeth- my uncle was a mail carrier and when he got older they tried to get him to take an inside job but he wouldn't hear of it. I cannot understand why the USPS would not offer your sister a position that would allow her to continue to work but wouldn't be so hard on her.

I have to hand it to you for heading out without your cellphone. I'm too dependent on it not to have it with me.

And, while I no longer have beautiful current beach pictures to share with others, I have to admit that the weather here in Houston is a lot better than other parts of the country. We spoke to Larry's daughter (in Omaha)  today and they are being dumped on by snow.

William Feela My sister tells me today Minneapolis is set to break an all-time record for snow. She says tied for the snowiest month on record since time began and tomorrow it's below zero again with more ice and wind.

Kat Palmiotti Well, I'm a bit too old for hitchhiking, LOL. Although I did manage to hop into a moving car making a U-turn in the middle of Ali'i Drive at rush hour.

Chris Ann Cleland Yes, she went back to carrying mail at the post office because they stopped paying her for disability, although her disabilities have not gone away. She is supposed to work with restrictions, but the post office has ignored those requirements. Plus she's having a second knee surgery shortly.

Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD A lot of people from Washington move to Hawaii. But it's not for everybody. It's sort of a calling as the islands talk to you or they don't.

Kathy Streib My sister doesn't make the post office sound like a nice place to work. She describes it as idiots in power positions who don't give a shit and no hierachy for support. Not in so many words.

I've been to Houston in the winter, though, and it's beautiful. Do you ever visit Galveston?

Sheila Anderson Yes, your life is very different to mine in contrast. I love looking at your snow photos and all the work you do in your yard every year.
