Every day that I am on vacation in Hawaii, I am grateful that I am not in the miserably cold weather in Sacramento. Especially more so when my sister sends me a photo of the back-breaking job she just went through in Minneapolis to shovel her front sidewalk. I thought of that yesterday when I met up with my friend Loli to go to the beach. For some reason, Kuakini was blocked off, and we could not go to the beach we wanted to visit. Instead, we headed across Ali'i Drive and turned south in search of another.
On foot is a big of a pain but sometimes it's the best way to discover. We located shoreline access and zipped down the path only to be confronted by a plethora of wedding guests already seated and waiting. Oops. Not our beach for that moment in time. As we marched back up the hill, a woman in an old car pulled along side us to ask about the beach. Loli engaged her and asked if she would give us a ride to Kahalu'u Beach.
She hopped in the car. Hey! I had no cellphone, no money, nothing but my car keys in a waterproof bag. How would we get back, I asked? See? I think about those things in advance.
Loli says, we'll get a ride from somebody or else we'll hitchhike. Well, that was an adventure waiting. Turns out the driver was from New York with a home in Humboldt (north of Sacramento). We met another friend of Loli's at the turtles beach. Found interesting shells in low tide, went swimming, watched the turtle flippers wave at us when caught in the surf. Our new friend, Anita, did drive us back, thank goodness.
