Airline Miles: the Big Myth

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with Referral Group Incorporated

I love to travel. I tend to go to exotic places that are far away and often the flights are really long. I have acquired thousands of miles and was able to use them until about two years ago when getting seats for miles became almost impossible. Now I am finding that there is no way to successfully use my miles when I want even if that time has a lot of options.

For fifteen years, yes 15, I have been trying to use my Virgin Air miles without any luck. It doesn't matter whether I call ten months in advance or ten days before a time I need to hook up with a small group. Sorry, there are no seats available. Of course if I wish to buy a $7000.00 seat they are available. It is a big gift that can't be opened or used. I now know what bait and switch is. Bummer. Rant over.

Hi Will. It isn't even blackout dates. It is just that they want to sell those seats so there are never any available. TY      Sheila

Sheila,

We stopped flying on Virgin after a miserable round trip to Boston, when I paid for aisle seats and got the middle one.

Here is what I have learned.  When using points book early.  We had first class tickets to Europe by using both UA and AA miles.  It was United one way, and AA the other way.  The earlier you book the better your chances are.   We booked in March for an October trip. Of course, they make you pay taxes and a fee for playing with the computer.

2.  We have a great credit card (write us).  The points are worth 1 and 1/2 times.  They convert them to $$ and they book your flight, hotel, etc.  Recently we had to go to SF and wanted to fly out of here.  It used up 30,000 miles for both of us as this was a last minute trip and 7,000 for a lovely bed and breakfast.  The only thing we paid for was the rental car.  Ours friend who is always flying to exotice places because her son and family are in  Singapore used the travel arm to book her trip on the maiden LA Singapore flight.  She flew first class  (left a week ago) for $2500 round trip.

UA's Polaris (first/business) fares to Europe in December were $4000 a person on the Polaris.  With my accrued miles, it would cost us less than 2 grand each flying from SBA to SFO and direct to Paris.  That is the cost of coach.

3.  Check out the points guy.com, and Reward Stock.com a company that Mark Cuban invested in on Shark Tank.  I use the points guy on occasion for research, and the other, I have not looked into.

4.  Non-Stop long flights are the hardest to get.  The less expensive flights are the ones that have on layover.  We like flying out of Santa Barbara vs LAX, which means we have a layover in Phoenix, SFO, Denver, Dallas, Mpls, etc.  They are usually short, and we don't mind stretching our legs.  After that the flight is non-stop.

Hope this helps you for the next rrip.  Gabe Sanders has given you a good idea, be nice about your posting and one often does get a reply...A

I think it matters what airline you have the miles with I use a credit card and when flying back from my camino used that to book my flightand got a pretty good deal. I see Ron and Alexandra Seigel gave some very good ideas above as well. Sometimes it is better to use the miles to upgrade from one class to another on a booked seat.

Hello Alexandra. I have tried for 15 years. I wan't able to get Japan even 10 months in advance on any airline. For the last week I have trying to get Johannesburg in Sept. to no avail. I can get an economy seat but not Business. TY

Sheila - that is a real bummer.  I think I have used both American Airlines and definitely JetBlue but none were to exotic places.

Hi Sheila- We use a credit card for our air miles which gives us more choices. Ron and Alexandra Seigel have taken the time to give you some excellent advice. (BTW- I know it's not something you two typically write about but your comment would make a great post.)

Sheila, I stay out of these events... Diane used Jet Blue then she switched to Delta and the list goes on and on... you have to play their games.... your post reminded me of when Diane tried to get us in to the French Laundry Restaurant one year in advance it did not work... if you wanted to get in you needed a hip cool trendy Chef to get you in... and I had a problem with not wanting me to take my $800-$1000 two person dinner... so I bought the cookbooks instead:)Endre

Morning Sheila.

I never had one of those credit cards or anything else with the air miles etc.  In fact I don't have a credit card.  If I can't pay in cash or use my debit card, it just doesn't happen

Hi James. A credit card for me is a convenience. I also earn miles because I fly, but that doesn't matter either. I'm just bummed. TY   Sheila

Put 40 years of experience to work for you

Hi Sheila: Oh, I feel your pain. I use Delta miles a lot to fly between Sacramento and Los Angeles, and then pay for a premium upgrade, which is usually only $10 or so. However, the miles needed to go first class between Sacramento and Kona are enormous. It is better to use the upgrades, however, first class is always full on Hawaiian, and they won't let you use those six Pulani free first upgrades until 24 hours before the flight. So chances of getting into first class are pretty slim.

I am not one of those travelers who can sit in economy coach for more than maybe an hour. It's just so incredibly uncomfortable and a horrible experience, and that is intentional, too. Honestly, boxing you in like a sardine is disgusting and consumers should protest.

Hi Elizabeth. I don't do less than Business when I go abroad ever. I won't risk not being able to upgrade for a 20+ hour flight so I am simply out of luck. TY           Sheila

Hi Sheila

Flying these days, and using airline miles, can be a real trial. The whole experience can get really ugly and unpleasant, and ypu pay for it, too!
