An Oceanfront Transaction to Love

In a previous blog post, I mentioned that Chef Dolores and I lived at the Virginia House on Atlantic Avenue in Virginia Beach for many years. A new condominium building, Oceans, was built on the next block north between the Virginia House and the historic Cavalier Hotel.

The lender took over the project and we were able to negotiate an agreement to sell the condominium units and to manage the completion of the construction needed to finish the building. I loved the opportunity and enjoyed the challenge to successful complete this work.

One of the advantages that I had was that I was a past president of Tidewater Builders Association the regional organization. I was able to use my industry contacts to staff the management needed for the construction needs and as experienced real estate brokers, we knew how to sell condominiums. This was one of the most interesting projects during my real estate career.

Thankfully, when we finished this project, we had another unusual business opportunity to purchase a real estate franchising business in North Carolina. We opened an office in Charlotte, NC but that is another story to tell at another time.

Good morning, Roy... no doubt that Virginia Beach is a special place... then again, I like to think so is Charlotte. Waiting to hear more about your Charlotte story. And wasn't Virginia the one that coined "Virginia is for Lovers" phrase? Perfect for your post today.

Roy, my husband and I lived in the Virginia Beach area.  We actually met at the Chrysler Museum in Norfolk so we have special memories connected with that area.

We love the Chrysler Museum. Dolores and I took some of their trips many years ago. They also helped us with art exhibits in our Virginia Beach office.

What a fantastic opportunity for you and Dolores.  Sounds like it was a "win win" transaction for everyone in the condo development.

My son told me a delightful story about Virginia Beach.  He is U.S. Navy Retired.  He joined the Navy to see the world.  However, his first 4 years were spent in Key West (land duty only).  And, then he was sent to Fallon, Nevada for the next four years.  No sea duty there!  Finally, he became really excited when he was stationed aboard the U.S.S. Kitty Hawk, an Aircraft Carrier.  However, it was dry docked for quite some time in Virginia Beach (or near there).  Finally, he was able to experience sea duty.  However, on his first deployment, the carrier was deployed to the Persian Gulf, when the U.S.S. Cole was hit.  They couldn't make port for 5 months.  He was also in the Persian Gulf, during the first Gulf War, when the Kitty Hawk was a staging area.  I will never forget watching CNN one night and actually spotting my son running across the hanger bay with a 50 calibre machine gun on his back.  Later, he was stationed on the U.S.S. Lincoln, when George W. Bush landed aboard, and declared "Mission Accomplished."  If only had been!

I suspect that your son's ship was at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, VA.
