Picking papayas from the tree in Haiku Maui Hawaii

Papayas are a favorite tropical fruit around the world.

We are blessed with a bounty of papayas this season, despite the wet winter.  It seems the rich soil from the previous veggie garden has made a big difference.  So I put together a short 1 minute video to show what the trees look like and how to pick the fruits, since many people have no idea where papayas come from.

It takes about a year to year and a half from planting to picking.  To really be on top of things you'd be starting more seeds every year or two to replace the old trees as they get too tall and awkward to pick... a fruit picker pole can only reach so far.  I try to remember this fact but of course when you have buckets of papayas it's easy to forget!

So now we enjoy the fresh fruit every day with our breakfast, and have so many to give away too.  Chickens love the cast off seeds and skins, so nothing goes to waste.  Sometimes the plants will sprout up from the compost pile too, from any that get tossed in there by mistake.

Buyers of homes in Hawaii like to have fruit trees in the yard.  Papayas and bananas are some of the easiest fruit trees to grow, and they don't take long to produce results.  What kind of fruit trees would you plant?

Georgie, so fun to live in a climate where such wonderful things grow, Diane gives away lemons and oranges all the time, now I usually do not buy Papaya due to the expensive price points, on the other hand Mango I buy regularly when it is south of $2 a fruit:))Endre

Oh yum, I love papayas and mangos and bananas. I remember when my mom first moved to Hawaii, she was staying at a motel temporarily and would wander outside the room in the morning to pick both for breakfast. How wonderful.

I do not have papayas very often, but I sure do love the taste of them.  How neat it would be to pick one daily and eat it.

I just love this Georgie. Now to see a branding slide at the end of the video would be a great addition.
