What Do You Know About a Praying Mantis?

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Gold DRE #00697006

I've always thought a praying mantis reminds me of the lead singer in Midnight Oil. You gotta admit there is a strong resemblance. However, I did not realize that a praying mantis is supposed to bring good luck. I had heard that dragonflies and hummingbirds can bring good luck or supposedly messages from the beyond, LOL, if you believe in that sort of thing, but had no idea about the praying mantis.

Turned out to be a bit of truth to that. You can read more about it in my personal blog today at this link: Will a Praying Mantis Bring You Good Luck?

One of my very favorite bugs. Here's a photo to prove it. I caught this one doing  a ballet in my begonia.

PS - I also consider them auspicious. And also consider this one of the best photos I've ever taken. I should frame it. Lol.

Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD don't they have the cutest faces? I don't see them very often. Do you? I mean, besides the one I found this week, the last time was probably driving through Texas when a praying mantis hitchhiked on my windshield.

I used to see them often at our other house, it backed to a wetland and they loved our back patio. No doubt good hunting grounds. We have over an acre now and I don't run into them as often. Wish I did. I'll be on the lookout this summer.

Aloha Elizabeth - isn't life full of surprises?   People we see at open house events.  Finding an elevator at that opportune moment.  Maybe even a praying mantis.

I had not heard that one before Elizabeth Weintraub Sacramento Real Estate Agent, Top 1% of Lyon Agents . It's extremely rare to see one this far North.

We see them around our house periodically.  Not so much last year but plenty the year before.

Michael Jacobs Especially in Hawaii where I say we need to always expect the unexpected. It is very fluid. My hard copy calendar book -- I know, right? Who keeps an actual calendar? -- is filled with scratch offs, appointments and meetups constantly change. We are dependent on each other, and the person you're meeting could have a conflict with another appointment because it's just the way it is.

Bob "RealMan" Timm I was trying to remember whether I've ever seen a praying mantis as a kid, and I think I did. They seemed to be brown, though, and not green. Maybe I just thought they were a praying mantis and they were actually some kind of grasshopper.

Now that is very interesting. . .I could have swore those creatures were "Preying Mantis," not "Praying Mantis."  I actually Googled it just now because I was certain you had misspelled.  So at this early hour on a Saturday morning, I learned I will need to apologize to those little green visitors when they come to my garden this spring.  I've been accusing them of being carnivores, rather than spiritualists!

Myrl Jeffcoat I can see why you would be confused. The concept of preying and praying, especially when it comes to passing around the collection plate, can be very similar to each other.
